About The Position

The Lead Teacher is responsible for developing curriculum and coaching volunteer teachers to ensure students of ELC receive high-quality instruction and can achieve their learning goals while being seen, supported, and understood. The employee in this position is a licensed teacher (ABE or ESL preferred). This is a part-time, non-exempt role, working a shift of 5 hours a day, 20 hours a week from Monday to Thursday between 4 pm-9 pm. This position will work on-site during school hours. The schedule is somewhat flexible, though regular hours will be expected at set times. The Lead Teacher reports to the ELC Program Director.

  • Knowledge and ability to use standard office equipment and programs.
  • Ability to work at a desk and in front of a computer, use a keyboard and mouse, and perform repetitive motions such as typing, sorting, pinching, and other office routines.
  • Ability to perform physical duties such as talking, visual acuity to determine accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned, proximity use of computer software, and the safety of workplace surroundings for themselves, volunteers, and guests.
  • Ability to work well alone or with others.
  • Valid Minnesota Teaching License required, ABE or ESL preferred
  • Experience teaching adult English Language Learners preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Supervisory experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Teach or assist in classes and provide tutoring support as needed.
  • Source, adapt, and/or create classroom curriculum.
  • Request, maintain, and/or develop appropriate and necessary teaching resource materials, including lesson plans, that volunteers understand when and how to use and can access at school and online.
  • Ensure the curriculum meets federal College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS), any additional relevant state of Minnesota ABE ESL standards, and the needs of all students.
  • Help orient, train, and observe volunteers periodically during classes and meet 1:1 to provide feedback and support.
  • Address issues promptly, openly, and fairly, and escalate to the Program Director if needed.
  • Provide ongoing training and support for all volunteers regarding best practices, curriculum changes, and programming updates.
  • Participate in training, meetings, and conferences related to adult basic education, volunteer training, immigrant and refugee issues, community needs, teaching, curriculum development, and equity.
  • Collaborate and assist with ELC and OSCS staff on school-wide or organization-wide issues, projects, and day-to-day needs.
  • Actively participates in building a culture of belonging within OSCS.
  • Other projects and duties as assigned.
