About The Position

82nd Street Academics seeks part-time lead teachers for our after-school program for the 2025 - 2026 school year. This position is located at Renaissance Charter School in Jackson Heights, Queens. Lead teachers design after-school programming with support from the After-School Director at Ren 1. They work with students across elementary, middle, and high school grade levels. The goal of our program is to provide the academic and social support needed to help students develop the skills required to successfully complete their secondary and collegiate education. We achieve these goals by providing a holistic program that includes homework assistance, Physical Fitness, STEM activities, Leadership Development Activities, Science Madness, Arts & Crafts, Dance, and Career Exploration. The estimated hours of this part-time position are Monday through Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. There are weekly meetings and professional developments that may occur outside of these hours. The pay rate is $18 - $19 per hour depending on previous experience and related education.

Requirements

  • Plan towards college graduation (required)
  • At least one year of experience working with the students in a professional setting
  • Commitment to the program through the end of June is a non-negotiable requirement
  • Readiness to learn and grow as a professional.
  • Knowledge of best practices in working with students in a school setting and/or an extracurricular setting.
  • Strong communication abilities and organization skills.
  • Creativity for problem-solving and supporting students in different situations.
  • Skills with taking initiative to implement positive change in the face of challenges.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree (preferred)
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership on a day-to-day basis for a class of 10- 15 students. Instructors are representatives of our nonprofit who work in partnership with the school community. They are responsible for maintaining the culture of the school in the afternoon.
  • Create lesson plans in advance of implementation ensuring that they are age-appropriate and coincide with the goals of the program and our stakeholders. Much of our planning is based on college exploration activities. Staff will work as a team to provide activities and experiences that increase students' awareness of the college application process and what options are available to them. We will work together to promote a college-attending environment among students.
  • Serve as role models for students.
  • Monitor attendance and use engagement strategies to increase daily attendance.
  • Adhere to policies on attendance and punctuality, dress code, and setting a tone of respect in interactions with students, colleagues, families, and staff.
  • Communicate with families about any concerns and provide excellent partnership management in the school community.
