About The Position

The Sensors Division within STR focuses on the development and analysis of advanced sensor systems in the RF, acoustic, and electro-optical domains. This includes the design and development of novel sensors and advanced information processing techniques from ideation to prototype implementations. The Subsea and Seabed Systems (SSS) Group develops and delivers advanced undersea sensor and signal processing systems related to intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and counter-ISR applications. Are you passionate about pushing the boundaries of subsea and seabed systems? Do you thrive on solving complex challenges and leading the development of cutting-edge electrical designs? We are seeking a Lead Subsea Systems Electrical Engineer to join our team and spearhead the design, development, and implementation of advanced electrical systems for novel subsea and seabed systems, including uncrewed undersea vehicles (UUVs), active and passive sonar, acoustic localization systems, echo-repeaters, acoustic modems, vehicle detection and tracking systems, acoustic countermeasures, and other underwater sensors. In this role, you will be at the forefront of innovation, driving the creation of UUV power and signal distribution systems, low-power sensor architectures, and multi-channel sonar amplification and signal conditioning chains. You will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists, leveraging your expertise in electrical architecture development, schematic capture, printed circuit board (PCB) design, and electrical test and integration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, Applied Physics, or a related field (Master’s or Ph.D. preferred)
  • 7+ years (or a Master’s with 5+ years or a Ph.D. with 2+ years) of experience in electrical design of subsea and seabed systems, or related fields, with a focus on electrical architectures, power distribution systems, and/or signal conditioning chains
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS) clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is needed by the U.S. Government
  • Proven track record of taking white-sheet electrical designs from concept to full operational functionality, including mixed signal designs incorporating power distribution and digital processing with high fidelity, possibly amplified, analog signals
  • Proficiency in electronic design automation tools such as Altium, Allegro, EAGLE, OrCAD, KiCad, or equivalent
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, ideally as part of complex technical projects
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a creative and analytical mindset
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences

Nice To Haves

  • Active security clearance
  • Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems
  • Experience with field testing, especially at-sea testing including system deployment, operation, and recovery operations
  • Knowledge of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and simulation environments
  • Experience using modeling and simulation to set system performance expectations for advanced or novel UUV designs
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C++, Python, or similar, with a focus on embedded systems and real-time control applications
  • Experience interacting with U.S. Navy and other U.S. Government organizations and processes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of electrical systems for subsea and seabed systems, from concept to operational deployment
  • Architect and implement power and signal distribution systems, low-power sensor systems, and sonar amplification and signal conditioning chains for subsea and seabed systems that prioritize efficiency and reliability
  • Design and implement electrical schematics and PCBs
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, and systems engineers to ensure seamless integration of hardware and software components
  • Conduct simulation, testing, and validation of electrical systems in both virtual and real-world environments, iterating designs to optimize performance
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a team of engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence
  • Contribute to the development of system-level requirements, architecture, and documentation to support the full lifecycle of subsea and seabed system development
  • Proactively evaluate and adopt cutting-edge tools, methods, and processes to enhance engineering outcomes and advance the state of the art
