About The Position

We have an exciting opportunity for a Lead Standards Engineer at UL Standards & Engagement. This is a hybrid opportunity based in Evanston, IL or Raleigh-Durham, NC. The Lead Standards Engineer will support a diverse portfolio of standards and lead project initiatives within the areas of batteries, electrification, and alternative energy technologies to advance the mission of UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) to make the world safer, more secure, and sustainable. The Lead Standards Engineer will serve as a senior technical contributor and subject matter expert, applying deep engineering knowledge to address emerging and complex safety science challenges. The Lead Standards Engineer will translate scientific insights, research development discoveries and incident trends into actionable strategies that support the advancement of ULSE standards and engagement activities. Requirements

  • Advanced application and broad technical knowledge in engineering principles related to product safety, batteries, electrification, electrical systems, energy storage, and alternative energy technologies.
  • Broad knowledge of hazard analysis, risk assessment, testing methodologies, and performance based safety requirements.
  • Strong project leadership skills, with ability to independently manage complex, multi-phase initiatives involving multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
  • High level analytical and problem solving skills, able to analyze issues and implement effective solutions to drive successful outcomes.
  • Advanced communication and engagement skills, demonstrated ability to facilitate technical discussions, build consensus, and influence outcomes among diverse stakeholders with varying priorities and perspectives.
  • Positive and collaborative interpersonal skills, with proven capability in fostering collaboration and partnership across teams to develop solutions with broad impact, while establishing effective relationships with others, including senior leaders and external stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker with ability to innovate and adapt in a dynamic industry landscape
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of directly related technical work experience.
  • Familiarity with product safety, standards development, testing, certification, regulatory compliance, or related technical role.
  • Experience developing or applying relevant standards, including UL, ISO, and IEC.
  • Experience with US and Canadian Standards and Codes, as well as national, regional, and international standardization bodies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage project initiatives with primary emphasis on batteries, electrification and alternative energy technologies.
  • Serve as technical resource for assigned projects involving new standards development, revision of existing standards, harmonization efforts, and strategic initiatives tied to emerging safety risks.
  • Leverage expertise in engineering and regulatory compliance to enable the development, implementation and continuous improvement of safety standards.
  • Analyze products, standards, and testing methodologies to gather insights and inform the preparation and composition of gap analyses, testing procedures and technical reports.
  • Manage end-to-end projects, plan and execute activities across the project lifecycle and ensure timely and high-quality deliverables.
  • Forecast project needs and anticipate issues.
  • Develop and apply end-to-end solutions and implement proactive strategies to address complex, undefined and ambiguous challenges.
  • Drive collaboration within the team to ensure team-level goal achievement and enable success in effective execution of standards activities.
  • Organize and present information on behalf of ULSE to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert representing ULSE at industry-related functions such as conferences, seminars and trade shows.
  • Develop and present technical content for diverse audiences including committees, working groups, conferences, and other stakeholder forums.
  • Facilitate technical discussions among stakeholders, to support consensus building and sound decision making.
  • Maintain continued awareness of industry trends and external context related to the portfolio.
  • Stay current with regulatory requirements and compliance frameworks governing public safety.
  • Independently execute tasks that range in complexity and scope.
  • Perform other duties as directed.
