About The Position

The Lead Producer serves as the senior day-to-day production and story lead for the National Storytelling Initiative. This role partners closely with the Project Director to shape the overall story slate, translate creative vision into executable plans, and ensure high-quality, mission-aligned storytelling moves from development through production and distribution. This is a long-term temporary full-time position and is expected to last through December 2028. This is a hybrid role that combines story leadership, production oversight, and light production coordination in a growing media house.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 10+ years experience in documentary, podcast, or narrative media production.
  • Demonstrated experience owning projects from development through delivery.
  • Strong story instincts with the ability to shape real-world narratives across formats.
  • Thrives in environments with limited structure, bringing curiosity, initiative, and follow-through to build projects from concept to execution.
  • Ability to take a loose brief or point of contact and independently conduct a deep dive, synthesizing complex or abstract material into clear story insight.
  • Ability to work well independently and in collaboration with team members.
  • Consistency in implementing and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and organized across creative and production work.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior creative partner to the Project Director in shaping the overall story slate.
  • Own assigned projects from development through release, acting as the primary producer.
  • Collaborate with Story Producers, directors, writers, editors, and creative partners to develop strong narrative arcs across formats.
  • Support story development across short- and long-form documentary, podcast, written, and digital content.
  • Provide thoughtful story feedback on outlines, scripts, and cuts, balancing creative ambition with clarity and ethics, depending on the story.
  • Step into producing on select projects as needed.
  • Mentor and support part-time Story Producers, helping align individual stories with the broader initiative.
  • Oversee production timelines and workflows for film and podcast projects.
  • Maintain visibility across project boards (e.g., Asana), ensuring priorities, deadlines, and dependencies are clear.
  • Track progress across producers, editors, and collaborators, surfacing risks or delays early.
  • Lead weekly production check-ins, including agenda-setting, notes, and follow-ups.
  • Ensure projects move smoothly across pre-production, production, post-production, and delivery.
  • Support distribution strategy for each project owned, including festivals, partner platforms, events, impact campaigns and educational use. This is a team effort.
  • Coordinate preparation of materials for launches, screenings, festivals, and public releases.
  • Collaborate with the Project Director and communications partners to think early and strategically about where stories should live.
  • Support post-launch learning and reflection to inform future projects.
  • Serve as a central point of coordination between creative collaborators and operations support.
  • Ensure stories align with the mission, tone, and values of the National Storytelling Initiative.
  • Collaborate with digital, web, and social partners to ensure story accuracy and consistency across platforms.
  • Support the rollout of new initiatives or sub-brands as they emerge.
