About The Position

Supports the mission of the department by ensuing that the right patients receive the right medication in a safe and timely manner under the direct supervision of an inpatient pharmacist. Develops a full understanding of the drug distribution system and demonstrates competency in carrying out all duties associated with delivering medications to the patient care units. Performs in a leadership capacity by taking on responsibility for managing the day-to-day workflow of other technicians in all areas on a specific shift. Is primarily responsible for ensuring training of new technicians, including proper documentation. Job Description: Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to: 1. Directly supervises the pharmacy staff to assure the quality of pharmaceutical services. 2. Supervises and monitors the work of OR, Hemo Onc, IV Room, and ED pharmacists and technician staff. 3. Assists the Assistant Director - Acute Care Pharmacy Services in ensuring that there are sufficient professional and technical support personnel to meet pharmacy department needs. 4. Manages the workflow and development of pharmacy practices of the inpatient central pharmacy and the OR/ Infusion Room/ ED satellite pharmacies. 5. In conjunction with the Assistant Director - Acute Care Pharmacy Services, provide recommendations on yearly evaluation. 6. Assures that work schedules, procedures, and assignments use pharmacy personnel and resources in the most efficient manner possible. 7. Assists with hiring process for employees, provision of disciplinary action and performance appraisals. 8. Ensures that all pharmacy personnel possess the education, licensure, and training needed for their responsibilities and that competence of all staff is maintained through hospital training and programs and continuing education programs. 9. Provides procedures and upkeep for a department orientation program and evaluates personnel during the yearly review process unless earlier indicated by Human Resources policy and procedures. 10. Works to prepare and monitor reports required by hospital committees as needed. 11. Along with management team, ensures compliance with relevant standards of practice with relevant standards and guidelines such as but not limited to the Joint Commission, State and Federal regulations and American Society of Health System Pharmacists. 12. Works with other members of the hospital (e.g. nursing, physicians other ancillary staff) to help define policies and procedures governing the procurement, distribution, and control of all drugs used within the institution in concert with the Medication Safety Pharmacist and Assistant Director - Acute Care Pharmacy Services and in compliance with applicable state and federal laws. 13. Works in collaboration with the Assistant Directors of Informatics and Acute Care for monitoring, upgrading and rolling out of pharmacy technology. 14. Ensure completion of controlled substance distribution, weekly counts and returns and assists with reconciliation of discrepancies. 15. Ensures completion of monthly nursing unit inspections. 16. Partner with clinical manger/coordinator and medication safety and drug policy pharmacist to assist in operationalizing improvements to provision of pharmacotherapy services. 17. Partner with the pharmacy purchasing and contracting manager, pharmacy purchaser(s) and medication safety and drug policy pharmacist to manage recalls, backorders, and withdrawal of medications from the market, including communication to affected caregivers. 18. Assist Purchasing and Contracting Manager with medication distribution with Lahey Ambulance providers. 19. In concert with the pharmacy management team, develop yearly performance evaluation template. 20. Serve as a preceptor for residents during hospital pharmacy practice experience Manager Inpatient- Central and Satellite Pharm Pract. 21. Serve as the department's liaison with the Northeastern University Pharmacy Co-Op program. 22. Serve as department's liaison and ensure departmental compliance with medication storage, waste stream and Chem. Pack programs. 23. Perform pharmacy staffing duties as assigned. 24. Assist the management team in meeting the goals and objectives of the department of pharmacy services. 25. Provide order entry assistance based on department need. 26. Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Director - Acute Care Pharmacy Services. Requirements

  • BS in Pharmacy or PharmD; graduate from an accredited college of pharmacy.
  • State of Massachusetts Licensed Pharmacist
  • Minimum of five years of pharmacy management experience preferred.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories.
  • Knowledge of drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Ability to design and implement systems necessary to collect, maintain and analyze data.
  • Knowledge of policies and regulations pertaining to the disbursement of pharmaceutical drugs.
  • Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned staff.
  • Ability to perform basic patient assessments and referrals.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Understands the principles of Driving the Business.
  • Possesses skills in empowering the employees to practice teamwork and Lahey Guiding Principles.
