About The Position

What Health System Pharmacy contributes to Cardinal Health Pharmacy Operations is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective coordination of Cardinal Health's pharmacy operations that service acute care hospitals, hospital retail customers, ambulatory care and alternate site facilities, oncology and cardiology practices as well as retail customers. Health System Pharmacy is responsible for providing customized pharmacy program solutions that reduce costs and improve patient care quality for hospitals, health systems and other integrated healthcare providers may also consult with and advise healthcare team on prescribed medications, supplies and related processes. Job Summary The Technician II, Health Systems Pharmacy provides assistance to the Pharmacist in the daily operations of the pharmacy. Activities include the preparation of and filling of prescriptions, taking pharmacy inventory and processing product returns. The Technician II, Health Systems Pharmacy ensures that all orders are reviewed by a registered pharmacist and records all activity in compliance with regulatory and company guidelines. This job frequently communicates with customers to ensure timely and accurate order fulfillment of all orders. The MA State Office of Pharmacy (MSOPS) Pharmacy Distribution Center (PDC) provides medications via central fill in unit dose or blister card form for DDS, DPH, DMH, DOC, and HOC facilities throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Our pharmacy technicians are responsible for providing a wide range of supportive tasks including unit dose packaging, blister card packaging, sterile IV compounding, use of automation (carousels and automated dispensing machines), as well as medication order entry. Site-based pharmacy technicians support the maintenance of pharmaceutical inventory at our facilities in the field. Schedule 40 hours per week. 1:30pm-10:00pm / 3:30pm-12:00am. Rotating weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Massachusetts pharmacy technician license required.
  • Ability to use technology such as computers, smart phones and tablets.

Nice To Haves

  • PTCB certified, or ability to obtain certification preferred.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Verifies receipt of medication deliveries at the site(s) and reviews for accuracy.
  • Demonstrates competency in the use of automated dispensing machines (ADMs) and carousels.
  • Maintains pharmacy inventory through filling the ADMs at the site(s), anticipates needed medications and supplies, and communicates with the site-based clinical pharmacists and/or PDC regarding any medication stock changes or needs.
  • Accurately loads medications from restock lists into ADMs and carousels.
  • Empties and reconciles contents of ADM return bins.
  • Ensures that look-alike, sound-alike medications are segregated in ADMs and carousels.
  • Accurately loads new inventory items and removes items deleted from inventory in ADMs and carousels.
  • Monitors ADM and carousel stock-outs and resolves in a timely manner.
  • Reports automated dispensing equipment issues promptly to the System Automation Technician.
  • Monitors medication supply for outdates and rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date.
  • Performs medication room/unit inspections and communicates results with site-based clinical pharmacists and PDC Director of Pharmacy.
  • Assists the System Automation Technician with review of current par levels at the site(s) and assists with implementation of par level and/or stock changes.
  • Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately, as applicable.
  • Repackages bulk medications in unit-dose packages safely and accurately per established procedures using appropriate techniques, as applicable.
  • Demonstrates competency in packaging equipment and adheres to established processes and procedures, as applicable.
  • Performs sterile and non-sterile compounding.
  • Attends and participates in departmental meetings, in-services, and quality improvement programs.
  • Completes timely and maintains all required training and education per department requirements (e.g., MySpark, myLearning, Continuing Education).
  • Adheres to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire, and infection control.
  • Complies with all applicable state, local and federal regulations.
  • Maintains safety-integrity-professionalism at all times to include appropriate communication with coworkers.
  • Organizes and prioritizes work assignments.
  • Demonstrates good oral and written communication.
  • Answers the telephone, identifying self and department; directs calls to appropriate personnel.
  • Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well organized; Keeps pharmacy equipment clean.
  • Completes and documents all assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly; identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned by supervisor.
  • Willing to modify work schedule to accommodate staffing needs of facility.
