Job Overview The Lead Pharmacy Technician, Production Team reports to the Pharmacy Production Manager and provides day-to-day leadership for pharmacy technicians responsible for medication fulfillment operations. This role oversees a fast-paced, highly automated production environment that includes adherence packaging, prescription filling, quality checks, and shipment preparation across multiple carriers. As a subject-matter expert in production workflows, the Lead Pharmacy Technician ensures accurate, compliant, and timely execution of patient medication orders while balancing throughput, quality, and safety. The Lead serves as the primary resource for front-line technicians, providing real-time guidance, prioritization, and issue resolution to maintain operational continuity and meet service-level commitments. This role partners closely with pharmacists, leadership, and cross-functional teams to optimize workflows, leverage automation effectively, and support continuous improvement as production volumes scale.

Requirements

  • Active Virginia pharmacy technician license
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Experience with retail, mail order or LTC pharmacy data entry and pharmacy dispensing software strongly preferred.
  • Experience with FrameworkLTC, FrameworkECM, Parata or other pharmacy automation systems strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy laws and federal and state regulations concerning patient care
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong knowledge of workflow and pharmacy operations
  • Strong critical thinking and independent problem-solving skills

  • Previous leadership experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate daily Production operations to ensure accurate, complete, and on-time fulfillment of prescription orders, consistently meeting assigned promised delivery dates and ensuring medications arrive to patients at least two days prior to pill in mouth (need by) date.
  • Oversee end-to-end fulfillment workflows including automated adherence packaging, manual filling, quality checks, and shipment preparation, ensuring compliance with pharmacy regulations and internal quality standards.
  • Exercise sound judgment and critical thinking to resolve irregular orders, production exceptions, automation downtime, and urgent fulfillment needs while maintaining accuracy, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
  • Manage and optimize daily workflow for a cross-functional Production team by prioritizing work queues, balancing capacity, and reallocating resources to meet or exceed operational goals.
  • Anticipate volume fluctuations, system constraints, and staffing needs to support scalable operations in a growing, high-throughput environment.
  • Proactively identify workflow inefficiencies or bottlenecks and implement process improvements that increase throughput, reduce rework, and improve on-time delivery performance.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between Production and Care teams, proactively identifying, communicating, and resolving upstream issues that may impact order accuracy, readiness, or delivery timelines.
  • Partner closely with pharmacists, leadership, inventory, and logistics teams to ensure seamless handoffs and alignment with goals/metrics
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve Production workflows, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and process guides to drive consistency, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Train, mentor, and support pharmacy technicians across all Production roles, incorporating operating automated systems safely, reinforcing standardized workflows, accountability, best practices and adherence to SOPs.
  • Participate in testing, feedback, and rollout of new tools, automation enhancements, or workflow changes, acting as a change champion for front-line staff.
  • Ensure compliance with established Board of Pharmacy requirements related to automated delivery systems.
