The Lead System Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of the Material Recovery Facility’s automated processing systems. This role oversees system performance, coordinates with maintenance and leadership, assists with troubleshooting mechanical or operational issues, and ensures production goals are met. The Lead System Operator also provides direction to sorters and supports overall workflow to maintain uptime and maximize material recovery.

Requirements

  • Prior experience working in a recycling facility, manufacturing plant, or industrial environment preferred.
  • Familiarity with conveyor-based automation systems and material handling equipment.
  • Ability to perform lockout/tagout (training provided if needed).
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to lead a team.
  • Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn troubleshooting techniques.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, high-noise environment.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and perform physical tasks for extended periods.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor all automated system components, including conveyors, screens, optical sorters, balers, magnets, eddy currents, and related equipment.
  • Start up, run, and safely shut down equipment according to established SOPs.
  • Continuously observe system flow to identify jams, blockages, misfeeds, or equipment irregularities.
  • Ensure proper material distribution along lines to avoid overload conditions and maintain optimal throughput.
  • Perform lockout/tagout procedures when addressing jams, clearing blockages, or supporting maintenance activities.
  • Enforce safety protocols and promote safe work practices among line staff and sorters.
  • Conduct quick, safe interventions to prevent injuries and reduce downtime.
  • Communicate promptly with maintenance technicians regarding mechanical issues, system failures, or performance concerns.
  • Provide real‑time updates to supervisors and facility leadership on system status and operational challenges.
  • Coordinate workflow with sorters, ensuring they understand line conditions, material quality expectations, and any required adjustments.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for system-related issues during the shift.
  • Track and report daily tons processed, equipment downtime, and any operational anomalies.
  • Document system stoppages, corrective actions taken, and maintenance notifications in logs or CMMS systems.
  • Assist leadership in reviewing production data and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Provide guidance to sorters and line staff to ensure efficient material separation and proper placement.
  • Support training of new operators or sorters on equipment behavior, safety practices, and facility procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring debris is cleared and walkways remain safe.
  • Diagnose minor mechanical issues related to belts, screens, sensors, air systems, and baler functions.
  • Make immediate operational adjustments to avoid system interruptions.
  • Recognize system inefficiencies and escalate issues requiring technical repair.
  • Ensure outbound materials meet facility quality standards for contamination and composition.
  • Work with sorters to improve line performance and reduce contamination rates.
  • Monitor equipment calibration settings, including optical sorter tuning and air-jet accuracy (if applicable).
  • Monitor system alarms and respond appropriately.
  • Support baler operations, including bale quality checks and tag accuracy.
  • Assist with housekeeping tasks around equipment to prevent fire hazards and maintain system reliability.
  • Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and improvement initiatives.
  • Follow all company, environmental, and regulatory guidelines.
