About The Position

LEAD NURSE Qualifications: Must comply with all employment criteria legally established by the Lee County Board of Education. Licensed Registered Nurse. Possession of current Alabama Nursing License. Experience as a registered nurse and proven experience of setting up health or departmental programs. Nursing administration or supervision experience. Five years of School Nurse experience is preferred. CPR certified – BLS/ACLS Ability to communicate effectively with principals, teachers and students. Valid Alabama driver license, reliable transportation, and evidence of insurance. Demonstrate aptitude for successful completion of the assigned task. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. Background Check Required: ( HB402 ACT 99-361 Alabama Legislature) Upon offer of employment, employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. REPORTS TO : Director of Student Services FLSA Status: Exempt JOB GOALS : To manage and evaluate an efficient, system-wide Health Services Program. To successfully serve as program practitioner. To provide health services and technical consultation to all students and staff members in order to maintain good health in the school system. To develop, administer, and maintain a system of health care, which will strengthen and facilitate the educational process by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning in individual students and by promoting an optimal level of wellness for students and staff. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Applicable to All Employees: Attend on a regular and predictable basis. Complete assigned tasks in a safe manner and in a constant state of alertness. Responsibilities

  • Uphold professional standards, the Alabama Nurse Practice Act, and other state and local statutes and regulations applicable to school nursing practice.
  • Develops a health care plan with specific goals and interventions delineating school nursing actions unique to students’ needs.
  • Develop and execute a protocol for securing substitute nurses as health service staff is absent including serving as the first available substitute.
  • Coordinate with all schools to secure field trips and extra-curricular activities are covered as required by health service staff.
  • Assume the responsibility for management and planning for acute, chronic, and emergency health problems including the appropriate referral and follow- through.
  • Assist in communicable diseases control and management of suspected and diagnosed cases of infectious disease through provision of information.
  • Participate in and lead staff development activities as appropriate.
  • Monitor compliance with immunization law, Anaphylaxis Preparedness Act, AED Act, Jessica Elkins Act, and Safe at Schools Act.
  • Manage suspected and diagnosed cases of infectious disease and provide the information to faculty and staff.
  • Consult with, conduct in-service training for, and serve as a resource person to staff and administrators for beginning of the year health issues, new teacher orientation, and CPR training.
  • Maintain open communication with the families, staff, and communities.
  • Serve as liaison in health-related matters between principal, instructional staff, support personnel, parents, students, and/or health care providers.
  • Manage Health Services by conducting school health assessments and report to proper agencies.
  • Assess and gather date for Diagnosis Survey and reconcile results for the school system.
  • Develop, revise, and implement policies as required by the Alabama Board of Nursing and the Alabama State Department of Education.
  • Supervise Health Services Staff as required. (LPNs are required to be supervised weekly and monthly evaluation sheet completed).
  • Maintain health records at the central office.
  • Maintain and purchase health services supplies and monitor the budget.
  • Monitor monthly paperwork and complete as required.
  • Develop pertinent information on health-related issues that may arise and provide to staff and community once approved by Director of Student Services and Superintendent. (Memos on outbreak, heat related issues, etc.)
  • Submits reports to the Alabama Board of Nursing, State Department of Education and the Alabama Public Health Department in a timely manner.
  • Comply with State and Federal guidelines.
  • Work with each principal to conduct health service personnel evaluations.
  • Participate successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment.
  • Supervise students with medical concerns attending summer camps.
  • Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
  • Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely and professional manner.
  • Exhibit interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
  • Follow attendance, punctuality and proper dress rules.
  • Attend monthly status update meeting with Director of Student Services.
  • Other duties of school nurse and deemed necessary by the Superintendent or Superintendent’s designee.
