Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
  • Five years of related experience with demonstrated leadership skills.

  • ASCP certification as a Medical Technologist.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the work of others as assigned in a medical laboratory section.
  • Works with considerable independence to perform and interpret various chemical, microscopic, and/or bacteriologic tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Is expert in the use of all equipment and procedures for an assigned area.
  • Interviews prospective candidates for positions in the laboratory and makes recommendation to Manager.
  • Evaluates new hires performance and conducts performance reviews on employees assigned.
  • Schedules employees for various lab benches and shifts; reviews all work performed in area to ensure completeness and quality and takes corrective action as necessary.
  • Discusses performance issues with employees and recommends disciplinary action to Manager.
  • Follows established protocols to perform an all kinds of tests, including the most complex for an assigned area.
  • Provides guidance and consultation to Medical Technologist I’s and Medical Lab. Technicians in the interpretation of highly complex or unusual test results.
  • Interprets and correlates clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis, and clinical condition to explain test results (normal/abnormal) so that appropriate action can be taken.
  • Troubleshoots testing process discrepancies.
  • Develops new test and quality procedures for assigned area.
  • Ensures that test results meet requirements of the laboratory quality control program.
  • Ensures preventative maintenance for equipment in assigned area.
  • Performs complex troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex equipment and instrumentation.
  • May assist in the roll-out of new equipment and equipment modifications.
  • Instructs technicians and technologists in the set-up and operation of new equipment and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies.
  • Instructs students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate records of tests performed, using computer-based systems.
