About The Position

The Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist is the resource person for the Laboratory Department and works closely with their Laboratory Supervisor. He/she helps coordinate all department activities and testing protocols on a day-to-day basis to ensure accurate and timely result reporting. These include, but are not limited to: validity of test results, instrument functionality including all calibrations and quality controls; organizing and prioritizing workflow; training and teaching; and other duties as assigned by their supervisor. The Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist must have an in-depth knowledge of laboratory techniques, principles, and instruments. He/she must demonstrate a willingness to work with the realization that an error may have serious consequences for patients. The Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist must demonstrate attention to detail for extended periods of time. He/She must demonstrate skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees and departments. Expectation is for all performed duties to be in accordance with Singing River Health System procedures and policies, accreditation organization, and governing guidance and publications for health care employees. Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree of Science in Medical Laboratory Science or related scientific discipline defined by CLIA required.
  • Registered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) required.
  • Training and experience is that required by the ASCP registry for Medical Laboratory Scientists
  • Three (3) or more years of laboratory experience and two (2) or more years in that specific laboratory department.
  • Must demonstrate keen mental faculties/assessment and decision making abilities.
  • Must demonstrate superior communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information in person and by telephone.
  • Must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must possess emotional stability conducive to dealing with high stress levels.
  • Must demonstrate ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in complex situations is required.
  • Must have the ability to maintain collaborative and respectable working relationships throughout SRHS and other organizations.
  • Must possess superior customer service skills and professional etiquette.
  • Must possess proficient knowledge and ability to use a computer (must be keyboard proficient) and other office technology (i.e., telephone, fax, etc.), MS Outlook and Word.
  • Work requires the ability to function independently and as a team; must have the ability to adapt to workload demands.
  • Work requires the realization that an error may have serious consequences for patients.
