About The Position

We are seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer - Utility Systems to lead the design and implementation of critical infrastructure, including Steam, Chilled Water, Heating Hot Water, Compressed Air, Natural Gas, and Plumbing. Your expertise will ensure reliable, efficient systems that support FDA-licensed blood fractionation, purification, and filling operations. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will: Design Core Utility Systems: Develop robust designs for Steam, Chilled Water, Heating Hot Water, Compressed Air, Natural Gas, and Plumbing systems. Create Construction Documents: Prepare industrial and commercial code-compliant system drawings and specification packages. Specify and Size Equipment: Define requirements and perform sizing for boilers, chillers, cooling towers, heating hot water skids, air compressors, receivers, tanks, and related components. Ensure Quality and Compliance: Oversee vendor bid evaluations, evaluate submittals, and participate in factory acceptance testing for critical equipment. Oversee Construction Activities: Perform some supervision of contractors during construction to ensure adherence to design documents and answering RFIs. Commission and Turn Over: Support system start-up, commissioning, and prepare comprehensive turnover packages. Serve as Subject Matter Expert: Analyze existing utility systems and infrastructure, reconfigure for new operations, and provide technical leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field from an accredited university and ability to obtain a NC PE license. Other professional registration and/or certifications as appropriate.
  • Minimum of 6 years of industrial experience. Experience in Biotech or Chemical industry preferred.
  • Experience designing the following system types: Steam, Chilled Water, Heating Hot Water, Compressed Air, Natural Gas, and Plumbing is highly desired.  Looking for someone with full system design experience with at least two of those system types.

Nice To Haves

  • HVAC experience is not required but considered a plus.
  • Direct experience with AutoCAD, PipeFlo, Revit, Plant 3D is not required but will be considered a plus.
