About The Position

We are seeking a Lead Layout Designer to join our team in Henderson, NV to support the continued growth of its Plant Engineering – Minerals & Metals business. The Henderson office supports mining, industrial and heavy process projects across North America, including concentrators, material handling systems, processing plants and large‑scale industrial facilities. The team works on projects from early studies through detailed engineering and construction support, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams across the U.S. and Canada. Requirements

  • College diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent.
  • 12–15+ years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering design, with a strong emphasis on layout design for heavy industrial and/or mining projects.
  • Experience within a consulting engineering environment is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of proven experience as a discipline lead or technical lead on large or complex projects in a supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership and manage discipline teams across multiple projects.
  • Ability to oversee team performance, workload, and resource allocation to meet project objectives.
  • Capable of assessing professional effort and providing clear visibility on progress, performance indicators (CPI, SPI), and Estimate to Complete (ETC).
  • Proficiency in relevant engineering and 3D design tools, including Plant3D, Revit, MicroStation, SmartPlant, and Inventor.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills applied to practical engineering challenges.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written).
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to mentoring and developing junior staff and contributing to technical excellence within the group.
  • Demonstrated people-management capabilities aligned with a collaborative, inclusive, and performance-driven work environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Proven experience delivering projects in mining, heavy industrial facilities, mineral processing plants, or bulk material handling systems (considered a major asset).

Responsibilities

  • Act as Layout Discipline Lead on medium to large mining and industrial projects.
  • Participate in conceptual, pre‑feasibility, feasibility, and detailed engineering studies.
  • Prepare design calculations, design briefs, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Produce conceptual and detailed design sketches.
  • Review and oversee all layout general arrangement drawings and equipment model development.
  • Perform trade-off studies and prepare technical reports to support design decisions.
  • Review vendor drawings to verify compliance with engineering design requirements prior to fabrication.
  • Participate in and lead 3D model and design reviews.
  • Ensure interdisciplinary coordination with process, structural, civil, electrical, and instrumentation teams.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure accurate and timely exchange of design information while meeting departmental and client standards.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to layout project teams.
  • Lead and manage large teams of designers, including task assignment and work supervision.
  • Prepare man-hour estimates and determine layout staffing requirements for projects.
  • Contribute to project cost estimates and budgeting activities.
  • Ensure the technical accuracy, completeness, and overall quality of all layout deliverables.
  • Conduct layout technical quality audits across multiple projects.
  • Support construction, commissioning, and field activities as required.
  • Participate in field engineering activities and site assignments as required.
  • Maintain, update, and improve equipment libraries, departmental standards, and procedures.
  • Develop and recommend enhancements to design standards to reduce costs, improve quality, and support efficient plant maintenance.
