About The Position

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Lead ITS Traffic Engineer to join our transportation engineering team. This role will lead the planning, design, and implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) with familiarity in traffic simulation modeling, traffic signal design, and traffic operations analysis. The ideal candidate will bring technical expertise, leadership experience, and a passion for improving mobility and safety through innovative traffic engineering solutions.

Requirements

  • BS Civil or Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Eight years or ITS/Traffic engineering or related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Experience in traffic simulation software (e.g., VISSIM, Synchro), signal design tools, and GIS.
  • Knowledge of and experience with MUTCD, HCM, and FHWA guidelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or related field
  • PTOE Certification
  • Experience with connected vehicle technologies and smart mobility solutions.
  • Familiarity with traffic signal controller hardware and software (e.g., ATC, NEMA, Centracs).
  • Knowledge of data analytics platforms and transportation data sources (e.g., INRIX, Bluetooth, SCAT
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and project management

Responsibilities

  • ITS Planning, Design & Deployment:
  • Oversee the planning, design and implementation of ITS infrastructure such as CCTV, DMS, vehicle detection and identification, and SCADA systems.
  • Collaborate with IT and public agencies on system integration and data analytics.
  • Oversee communications design and development for ITS systems, including coordination with public and private stakeholders.
  • Oversee testing and acceptance processes for new ITS deployments and coordination with Operational stakeholders
  • Traffic Simulation & Modeling:
  • Develop and calibrate microsimulation models using tools such as VISSIM, Synchro, CUB, TransModeler., or similar applications
  • Analyze existing and future traffic conditions to evaluate operational performance and recommend improvements.
  • Interpret simulation results to support planning, design, and funding decisions.
  • Traffic Signal Design:
  • Lead the design and review of traffic signal plans, including phasing, timing, and coordination.
  • Prepare signal warrant analyses and intersection control evaluations.
  • Coordinate with agencies and stakeholders to ensure compliance with MUTCD and local standards.
  • Traffic Operations & Analysis:
  • Conduct corridor and intersection operational studies.
  • Perform capacity analysis, delay studies, and level-of-service evaluations.
  • Recommend and design improvements for traffic flow, safety, and multimodal integration.
