Lead Infrastructure Engineer

Blue Water AutonomyLexington, MA
10h$190,000 - $220,000

About The Position

We are seeking a Lead Infrastructure Engineer to design, build, and operate the core infrastructure systems that enable reliable autonomous operation across our fleet. This role owns the infrastructure stack end-to-end. It spans cloud platforms, onboard compute systems, and deployment pipelines that must function with limited connectivity in demanding physical conditions. You will define the architecture, build the initial systems hands-on, and establish the technical foundations that future infrastructure and platform teams will scale from.

Requirements

  • 8–15 years of experience in infrastructure, platform, SRE, or DevOps engineering roles.
  • Deep experience designing and operating cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or similar).
  • Strong fundamentals in Linux systems, networking, and container orchestration.
  • Experience working with bare-metal or on-premise systems in addition to cloud environments.
  • Comfortable working hands-on with production systems, hardware-adjacent constraints, and operational debugging.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines and lead system-level integration efforts.
  • Communicate clearly, balance speed with rigor, and take ownership from initial design through deployment and operation.
  • Energized by solving practical engineering challenges in fast-moving, mission-driven environments.

Nice To Haves

  • An obsessive focus on stakeholder quality of life and experience
  • Willingness to push the limits of AI-enabled workflows and processes
  • Experience leading/managing teams or cross-functional, deeply-impactful projects
  • Deep interest in software supply chain security

Responsibilities

  • Develop system and platform-level infrastructure architecture to ensure performance, security, and reliability in harsh and intermittently-connected environments.
  • Design and operate onboard compute environments that function as self-contained, fault-tolerant micro–data centers.
  • Build and maintain cloud infrastructure for fleet orchestration, telemetry ingestion, observability, and software deployment.
  • Own bare-metal provisioning, operating system configuration, and life-cycle management for shipboard hardware.
  • Design CI/CD and release processes that safely deploy autonomy software to vessels in the field.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and autonomy engineers to define constraints around power, thermal limits, redundancy, and failure modes.
  • Establish monitoring, logging, and remote debugging capabilities for distributed systems across the fleet.
  • Implement and maintain infrastructure security across hybrid environments including access control, secrets management, and more.
  • Support system integration and field troubleshooting.
  • Contribute to processes and tooling that enables faster development and more reliable operation of autonomous systems.

Benefits

  • Incredibly high-caliber teammates. You’ll work directly with our co-founders Rylan, Scott, and Austin.
  • A fast-paced, creative working environment that offers a lot of room for ownership and growth.
  • Opportunity to join a meaningful mission that protects American and our Democracy.
  • Expected Salary Range: $190,000-$220,000 annual base salary. Final compensation will depend on experience and skill level
  • Startup equity options
  • Generous PTO, medical, dental, and vision coverage
