About The Position

Engage and actively participate in Chino Prime Team for business success. Provide leadership for the R&D Laboratory & Development Shop in pursuit of customer service (internal and external). Support direct reports to achieve the next level of performance. Provide support for the test laboratory via budgeting, capital equipment justification, supplies, etc. Ensure the work is scheduled to meet the business needs and monitor progress in the laboratory in order to allocate resources efficiently and provide customers with timely feedback on requested work.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree
  • A 4-year technical degree
  • High level of knowledge of lean process development (job shop) and continuous improvements
  • Knowledge of testing and Compliance approval
  • A clear understanding and application of APQP process in the design and development of products.
  • Experience with effectively interfacing with cross-functional Departments and thorough knowledge of project management methodologies.
  • Ability to teach and coach teams on analytical tools and methods for continuous improvement
  • Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience within a leadership role.

  • BSME/BSEE/Industrial Engineering
  • Six Sigma Black Belt certification.
  • High level of knowledge of Thermodynamics, HVAC/refrigeration, sheet metal fabrication, welding, and the mechanical/electrical trades.
  • Minimum of 5-year experience in Software/Controls Interface and Hardware testing techniques
  • Mix of design, testing and quality engineering experience
  • Direct management of personnel and matrixed management

Responsibilities

  • Manage Technicians and Evaluation Engineers in the test lab. Guide and support the individuals to achieve their full potential.
  • Planning / Scheduling. Develop effective means of monitoring the work coming in, the due dates, the progress, and allocation of resources. Provide customers with timely feedback. Achieve schedule accountability. Develop plans and priorities and manage projects to continue technological improvement.
  • Act effectively as Group leader and promote the growth of the evaluation team that cover NPD/1st time builds, development shop technicians, evaluation engineers, laboratory technicians, and reliability engineering. Provide advisory services for group engineering managers, as well as project engineers in areas of test design, test data analysis, equipment design, manufacturing methods and equipment.
  • Develop a strong customer orientation within the department. This includes feedback on work progress, positive critiques of design, explanation of operational issues with units, and manufacture / service perspectives. Provide ongoing assistance to engineers and technicians in problem definition, gathering information, evaluating facts; identify practical alternatives and selecting the best course of action for the timely completion of projects.
  • Documentation, justification, and implementation of capital equipment for the development shop and test laboratory as well as outside support services. Maintain acceptable data accuracy in all areas and assure that all new test methods and equipment meet our accuracy standards.
  • Participate in developing and maintaining facility plans, merit plans, and budgets for the model shop, evaluations team, and labs.
  • Generate facilities project plan. Identify, secure and manage resources for departmental projects.
  • Represent department capabilities and methods in formal and informal customer presentations.
  • Assure conformance to all safety regulations and other laws.
  • Responsible for the $50M Hussmann World Wide R&D Laboratory Test Request System Data Base.
  • Capital & Operating budget responsibilities. Advanced instrumentation pilot programs for Chino Laboratory.
  • Reliability site lead for Specialty cases & systems.
  • Issues & reviews white papers and patents.
  • Active member in Specialty management NPI & Quality reviews.
  • Manage Chino CAPEX annual spend of $0.1M-$0.50M
  • Group annual budget of $1-1.5 million (includes all Fixed categories).
  • Develop 5-year capital plan for laboratory and development shop to support Specialty business needs and capability/capacity requirements
  • Specify and procure capital equipment to ensure technological advantage and competitiveness based upon plan and capital annual allotment.
  • Ensure repairs are completed in a timely manner to drive %OEE (throughput) of testing facilities.
  • Coordinate spend with Portfolio Solutions finance team.
  • Responsible for quality procedures and 3rc party laboratory satellite certifications.
