About The Position

In partnership with stakeholders, the Information Technology Division (ITD) of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) provides excellence in information technology delivery to enable NCDHHS’ mission and goals. Our team ensures that NCDHHS has consistent, cost-effective, reliable, accessible, and secure technology services. This Lead Data Engineer position is a member of ITD - Child Welfare. This position reports to Jason Dempsey, Applications Systems Manager. This role will be responsible for designing and managing the data, analytics, and reporting ecosystem that powers data-driven decision-making for the Child Welfare Program, from Salesforce data ingestion through Azure Synapse to advanced Power BI solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or an IT related field or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of progressive experience in business application consulting or development OR Associate degree in computer science or an IT related field or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of progressive experience in business application consulting or development OR High School or General Education Development (GED) diploma and eight years of experience in business application consulting or development OR An equivalent combination of education and experience

Nice To Haves

  • Strong command of SQL, Python, and distributed data processing frameworks (Spark, Databricks, Synapse, EMR, BigQuery, etc.)
  • Designs and maintains Power BI reports and dashboards.
  • Produces clear architectural diagrams, design documents, and operational runbooks.
  • Engineers and monitors Synapse pipelines to ingest, transform, and validate data.
  • Leads BI/data engineering initiatives, mentors staff, and enforces testing, governance, and security standards.
