The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. Performs highly complex (senior-level) custodial work. Responsible for performing highly complex cleaning and sanitizing tasks in state supported living centers including residents’ homes, bedrooms, office spaces, medical and activity areas. Conducts inspections of the buildings and equipment to ensure that they meet cleanliness and safety standards. Manages the inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment. Provide backup support to other custodians as needed. Supports the custodial manager in overseeing and planning general custodial functions. Keeps accurate records of custodial activities such as cleaning schedules, maintenance tasks, and any incidents or issues. Analyzes current custodial operations and identifies areas where efficiency and effectiveness could be improved. Ensures that buildings and cleaning equipment are properly maintained and repaired. Manages custodial supplies including monitoring inventory levels, restocking cleaning materials, and ensuring that necessary supplies are always available to custodial staff. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. This position acts as lead to other custodians and backs up Custodial Manager in times of absence.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date to drive a state vehicle. Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is preferred.
  • At least one (1) year paid experience in custodial/housekeeping work is required.

Responsibilities

  • Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. May serve in an on-call status on a rotating schedule as required to meet operational needs of the facility.
  • Cleans various areas within the facility, which includes living areas/homes, residents’ rooms, office spaces, medical activity areas, corridors, restrooms, and other spaces. Uses appropriate cleaning agents and techniques to eliminate pathogens and maintain a sterile environment to prevent the spread of infections. Handles biohazardous materials, disinfecting medical equipment, and cleaning sensitive areas.
  • Responsible for conducting regular and scheduled inspections of different areas within the facility and the equipment used for cleaning and maintenance. Assesses safety standards during inspections.
  • Tracks cleaning supplies and equipment in appropriate database. Regularly monitors stock levels of cleaning supplies and equipment to ensure an adequate supply is on hand. Initiates the process of reordering. Properly stores and organizes the cleaning supplies and equipment in a designated storage area. Checks incoming supplies and equipment for quality and accuracy. Tracks of the usage patterns of different cleaning supplies and equipment and advises Custodial Manager of discrepancies. Maintains accurate records of inventory levels, orders placed, received items, and reports any discrepancies.
  • Acts as lead to other custodians and backs up Custodial Manager in times of absence. Provides backup support to other custodians as needed. Collaborates with other custodians to ensure that custodial operations continue smoothly.
  • Works closely with the custodial manager to assist in various aspects of managing the custodial team and their tasks. Assists the Custodial Manager in assigning tasks to custodial staff based on workload, priorities, and skill sets. Collaborates with the manager to create and manage custodial schedules. Supports the Custodial Manager in maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene. Assists in organizing training sessions for custodial staff to ensure they are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge.
  • Records details of various custodial activities, including cleaning schedules, maintenance tasks, and any incidents or issues that arise during the course of work. Maintains a log of cleaning schedules that outlines which areas were cleaned, when they were cleaned, and who performed the cleaning. Documents maintenance tasks performed, such as repairs, equipment checks, and replacements. Notes any issues or concerns related to custodial activities, such as supply shortages, equipment malfunctions, or areas that require special attention.
  • Assesses all aspects of the custodial operations, including cleaning processes, equipment usage, staffing levels, scheduling, and resource allocation. Gathers cleaning logs, maintenance records, and incident reports. Analyzes the workflow of custodial activities to see if there are any unnecessary steps, redundancies, or areas where tasks can be streamlined. Evaluates how resources, including staff, equipment, and cleaning supplies, are allocated.
  • Conducts routine inspections of the buildings and cleaning equipment to identify any signs of wear, damage, or malfunction. Implements a preventive maintenance program for both the SSLC and cleaning equipment. Regularly clean and maintain custodial equipment to ensure its optimal performance. Coordinate repairs and, when necessary, upgrades to hospital infrastructure and cleaning equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
