The Lead Custodian oversees daily cleaning and maintenance operations to ensure a safe, clean, and well-maintained facility. This role provides guidance to custodial staff, coordinates work assignments, conducts inspections, and performs custodial duties.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of custodial or janitorial experience; prior leadership experience strongly preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to lead, organize, and motivate staff.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Candidate must be a US Citizen
  • Must have the ability to obtain a security clearance.
  • Must have a clean driving record.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job, with or without accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assign and monitor custodial staff tasks and schedules.
  • Train new custodians in cleaning procedures, safety practices, and equipment use.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for custodial team questions and issues.
  • Conduct performance evaluations of direct reports and provide feedback to management.
  • Perform routine cleaning such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, and restroom sanitation.
  • Operate cleaning equipment (buffers, scrubbers, extractors, etc.).
  • Respond to spills, urgent cleanup needs, and special event setups or breakdowns.
  • Ensure proper waste disposal and recycling procedures.
  • Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies; submit reorder requests as needed.
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure cleanliness, safety, and compliance with standards.
  • Report maintenance issues (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, safety hazards) to appropriate departments.
  • Ensure security of assigned areas, including locking/unlocking facilities as required.
  • Enforce safety protocols, including proper chemical handling and equipment operation.
  • Maintain records of cleaning tasks, inspections, and supply usage.
  • Support compliance with OSHA, health, and organizational safety standards.
