About The Position

The Lakeland Hills Family YMCA is seeking a mature, professional, and enthusiastic Lead Counselor to oversee designated camper group at the Rockaway River Country Club Summer Camp. This unique opportunity blends the mission-driven values of the YMCA with the elevated standards of a private club environment. The Lead Counselor plays a key leadership role in delivering a safe, structured, and engaging camp experience while modeling professionalism for fellow staff. In the absence of the Site Director, this role may assume on-site leadership responsibilities to ensure smooth daily operations and full compliance with YMCA policies. Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Two (2) years of experience working with children in camp, education, athletics, or youth development preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and effective group management skills
  • Strong judgment and ability to maintain professionalism in a private club setting
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain prior to camp start)
  • Confident, dependable, and mature leader
  • Professional and polished demeanor with families and club members
  • Calm, solution-oriented, and level-headed in fast-paced environments
  • Flexible and team-oriented
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Deep commitment to camper safety and well-being
  • Ability to sustain energy and active participation throughout the camp day

Nice To Haves

  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain prior to camp start)

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead one assigned camper group throughout the camp day
  • Plan and facilitate daily programming including rotations, swim supervision, lunch, and themed activities
  • Ensure a safe, structured, and engaging camp experience aligned with YMCA standards and private club expectations
  • Follow all YMCA policies regarding safety, medical protocols, behavior management, emergency response, and child abuse prevention
  • Model professionalism and strong group management for support staff
  • Mentor and support assigned counselors to maintain consistency and engagement
  • Maintain appropriate camper-to-staff ratios and accurate attendance records
  • Serve as acting on-site lead in the absence of the Site Director
  • Build positive, respectful relationships with campers, families, club members, and staff
  • Collaborate with the Site Director and camp team to uphold a high-quality camp program
