The Opportunity The Lead Control Systems Technician I plays a critical hands-on role in the successful installation, startup, commissioning, and maintenance of industrial control systems across Mission Critical, Life Sciences, and District Energy environments. This role serves as a technical lead in the fieldowning execution quality, troubleshooting complex issues, and guiding junior technicians while maintaining Thermo Systems safety, quality, and customer standards. This is an onsite position that can work out of the either of the locations listed above.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Industrial Automation, HVAC, Electrical Technology, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • 25+ years of experience in industrial controls, electrical systems, or instrumentation
  • Strong understanding of electrical and HVAC fundamentals
  • Hands-on experience with PLC hardware, control panels, and instrumentation
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs and electrical schematics
  • Ability to work independently in fast-paced field environments
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Valid drivers license and authorization to work
  • Ability to travel up to ~75% depending on project needs
  • Fit for duty at all times

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to HMI/SCADA platforms such as Ignition, Wonderware, FactoryTalk, or similar
  • Experience supporting Mission Critical or regulated environments
  • Prior experience mentoring junior technicians

Responsibilities

  • Lead on-site installation, startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting of PLC-based control systems
  • Serve as the primary field resource for electrical, controls, HVAC interface, and instrumentation issues
  • Coordinate daily field activities and guide junior technicians or subcontractors to ensure safe, high-quality execution
  • Set and enforce jobsite safety standards and best practices
  • Perform loop checks, point-to-point verification, calibration, and functional testing
  • Wire control panels, field devices, and instrumentation per drawings and specifications
  • Troubleshoot PLC hardware, I/O, control panels, and field wiring issues
  • Interpret and work from P&IDs, wiring diagrams, equipment schedules, and control documentation
  • Support FAT/HFAT activities, including execution support and documentation
  • Perform routine system maintenance and service work
  • Complete service reports and field documentation accurately and on time
  • Communicate proactively with project managers, engineers, and customers regarding progress, issues, and resolutions
  • Provide field feedback to improve designs, processes, and future deployments
