About The Position

We’re looking for a technically strong Lead Assurance Engineer to lead safety and assurance activities across the full engineering lifecycle of our complex, safety‑critical systems. You’ll take ownership of functional and system safety for multiple concurrent projects, ensuring that risks are suitably identified, controlled, and justified in line with recognised standards and regulatory frameworks. Working closely with systems, software, and hardware teams, you’ll embed safety into design and delivery, providing clear assurance that solutions are robust, compliant, and fit for purpose. This role is ideal for an experienced safety or assurance professional who enjoys leading technical assurance, influencing design decisions, and working autonomously across multidisciplinary teams. You’ll be comfortable engaging with internal and external stakeholders, including customers and regulators, and take pride in producing high‑quality safety cases, assurance reports, and evidence that demonstrate credible, well‑reasoned risk management within complex engineering environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years experience safety engineering within defence or safety-critical environments.
  • Working across the full engineering lifecycle.
  • Comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously and working autonomously.
  • Solid understanding of functional safety and daily application of relevant standards.
  • Knowledge of safety-critical standards such as Def Stan 00-056/00-055, IEC-61508, IEC-2061 MIL-STD-882 or equivalent.
  • Engineering discipline background (systems, mechanical or electrical disciplines welcomed).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to influence design decisions.
  • Proven experience as a Safety Assurance Engineer
  • Strong knowledge of safety engineering principles and lifecycle assurance
  • Experience producing safety cases and associated evidence
  • Familiarity with UK safety and regulatory standards
  • Experience of producing Safety Management Plans and Safety Case documentation
  • Experience of Conducting Risk identification and Hazard assessments
  • Previous experience in Creating and maintenance of hazard logs maintenance, evidence gathering and requirements validation
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

  • To be conversant with Jira and Confluence
  • To have experience with marine platforms and knowledge of MCA Workboat Code 3.
  • To have experience of using 3rd party test facilities to deliver assurance evidence.
  • Professional registration (IEng / CEng) or working towards is desirable

Responsibilities

  • Lead product assurance activities from concept development through delivery, qualification, and in-service support.
  • Deliver system and functional safety across a portfolio of concurrent projects.
  • Develop and maintain Safety Management Plans, safety cases, Assurance Reports and supporting evidence.
  • Lead hazard identification and risk analysis activities using recognised techniques (e.g. HAZID, HAZOP, FMEA).
  • Manage hazard logs, ALARP justification and residual risk acceptance.
  • Own safety requirements and ensure full traceability through design, verification and evidence.
  • Lead and support safety assurance activities across complex engineering projects
  • Develop safety processes that are aligned with industry best practice and customer requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant safety standards and regulatory frameworks (e.g. DEF STANs, EN standards, ALARP principles)
  • Work closely with systems, software, and hardware engineers to embed safety into designs
  • Support safety reviews, audits, and stakeholder engagement, including customers and regulators
  • Liaising with internal and external customers on all aspects of the product/project lifecycle whilst being actively engaged within the various Engineering (Sys Eng; hardware; software; security; ILS; HF; qualification; integration & system test) and Management teams
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical, electrical, and control engineers, to achieve integrated and cohesive system solutions.
