About The Position

Summer Externship - Legal Services Department - Law Student Extern This is currently an unpaid volunteer externship opportunity within the Legal Affairs department of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMHCS); however, SMHCS has applied for grant funding for this program, and if awarded, compensation may become available. As a Student Extern, you will work under the direct supervision of licensed attorneys and support our team in navigating the complexities of healthcare regulations and policies. The Extern will have the opportunity to participate and learn about health law through various legal projects and services which could include, but are not limited to, contract review and drafting, risk management, litigation and law enforcement support, policy and form development, real estate, regulatory compliance, and privacy law. The externship is designed to provide substantive educational experience and mentorship, with learning objectives tailored to each extern’s professional development goals. This externship is for the Summer of 2026 with the expectation of approximately 20-25 hours per week for 8-10 weeks. This externship may be available for academic credit through your law school.

Requirements

Current law student who has completed at least 1 year of law school pursuing a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited institution in good academic standing
Outstanding academic records with coursework or interest in healthcare law, business law, or compliance
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
