About The Position

The Office of the Bar Counsel in Massachusetts (OBC) conducts confidential investigations and prosecutes ethical misconduct by Massachusetts attorneys before hearing committees, the Board of Bar Overseers (BBO), and the Supreme Judicial Court. The office also educates attorneys on the Rules of Professional Conduct, provides information and support to members of the bar on the ethical practice of law, and explains the disciplinary process and alternative remedies to members of the public. Responsibilities

  • Assist Assistant Bar Counsel in the review and investigation of complaints against attorneys
  • Prepare formal charges
  • Present evidence at hearings
  • Reviewing and summarizing large volumes of file material and court documents
  • Obtaining information from a variety of sources
  • Case-specific research projects can include the interpretation and application of the ethics rules to specific situations, the appropriate sanctions for misconduct, and the applicability of procedural rules unique to disciplinary proceedings.
  • Research projects can also include issues of general applicability to the work of the office, such as monitoring the consideration of changes to the ethics rules and compiling significant cases on the interpretation and application of specific provisions of the Rules of Professional Conduct.
