About The Position

The Laser Operator is responsible for setting up, programming, and operating laser cutting equipment to produce precision sheet metal components in accordance with engineering drawings, work orders, and quality standards. This role requires strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple part numbers in a high-mix manufacturing environment.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED required; technical training preferred
1–3+ years of experience operating CNC laser cutting equipment in a metal fabrication environment
Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and geometric tolerances
Basic understanding of sheet metal properties and cutting behavior
Experience with measuring instruments and quality inspection processes
Familiarity with CNC controls and nesting software (e.g., Bystronic, Trumpf, Amada, etc.)
Ability to lift materials and stand for extended periods

Responsibilities

Set up and operate laser cutting machines (fiber and/or CO₂) to cut sheet metal components to specification
Interpret blueprints, drawings, and job travelers to determine cutting requirements
Load and unload raw materials (sheet metal) using appropriate material handling equipment
Perform machine programming or edits (as applicable) using nesting software to optimize material utilization
Conduct first-piece inspections and in-process quality checks using measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges)
Adjust machine parameters (speed, power, focus, gas type/pressure) to ensure optimal cut quality
Identify and segregate nonconforming material; communicate quality issues to supervision or quality team
Perform routine machine maintenance (lens cleaning, nozzle changes, preventative checks)
Maintain clean and organized work area in accordance with 5S standards
Track production data, material usage, and job completion in ERP systems
Collaborate with programmers, engineers, and downstream operations (press brake, welding, finishing) to resolve issues and improve throughput
