Requirements

  • Five years of experience and/or related vocational or tech training or any combination of equivalent experience and education. Examples of relevant training and experience include vocational/technical training in mechanics, electrical work, HVAC, plumbing, welding, carpentry, construction, or general building maintenance; and skilled trades work in mechanics, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, welding, carpentry, construction, or general building maintenance.
  • CDL Class B License preferred.
  • TDEC EPSC Level 1 Certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • OSHA Confined Space Certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • OSHA 30-hr Training within six (6) months of hire.
  • Electrical certification: City of Chattanooga Journeyman's License within six (6) months of hire.
  • Plumbing certification: Limited Licensed Plumber (LLP) license preferred
  • Grade I Collector System Operator Certification within one (1) year of hire.
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Ability to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for two years.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years of Microsoft Office applications experience preferred
  • Post-high school chemistry training is preferred.
  • Plumbing certification: Limited Licensed Plumber (LLP) license preferred

Responsibilities

  • Monitors, operates, maintains, and repairs various sanitation and landfill equipment, including blower, enclosed glass flares, leachate pump stations, stand-by generators, methane gas systems, compressed air systems, and wheel wash systems.
  • Collects stormwater and leachate samples and delivers to appropriate locations for analysis.
  • Prepares, maintains, and submits a variety of accurate documentation including reports, forms, records and other documents related to landfill operations, inspections, and maintenance activities, ensuring compliance with applicable Federal, State, County, and Local regulations including permit functions for both landfills.
  • Serves as the required role of Landfill Technician for both landfills as required by State and Federal permits.
  • Uses reasonable measures to keep emissions to a minimum during start-ups, shutdowns, operation, and malfunctions. These measures may include installation and use of alternate control systems, changes in operating methods or procedures, cessation of operation until the process equipment or air pollution control equipment is repaired, maintaining sufficient spare parts, use of overtime labor, use of outside consultants and contractors, and other appropriate means.
  • Interpret a variety of technical blueprints, schematics and/or other related documents.
  • Perform regular inspections and maintenance tasks to ensure the landfill facility operates efficiently and safely.
  • Maintain and operate pump stations, wheel wash systems, enclosed gas flare systems, and other landfill equipment.
  • Fabricate repairs and install modifications on the Landfill Gas flare system.
  • Conduct routine environmental sampling and testing to assess the landfill's impact on air, water, and soil quality.
  • Responsible for monthly well readings and gas port readings to monitor gas migration.
  • Generate reports to comply with air pollution and state regulations.
  • Bush hog around wells to maintain access.
  • Pull and clean pumps in wells to keep them in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Raise wells where waste is placed to maintain proper functionality.
  • Calibrate various meters before use to ensure accurate readings.
  • Troubleshoot and replace sensors for optimal performance of equipment and systems.
  • Repair various electrical equipment including starters, soft starts, and electric motors.
  • Repair air-driven pumps, vacuum pumps, airlines, leachate lines, gas lines, and other related equipment.
  • Perform industrial electrical tasks, including high-voltage systems, in adherence to safety standards and regulations.
  • Monitors gas extraction wells; performs monthly groundwater well level checks; performs quarterly landfill and methane inspections; collects monthly and quarterly gas, compost, and other monitoring or sampling as needed.
  • Performed routine inspections including, but not limited to: Weekly, monthly, and quarterly Landfill gas system, EPSC, wheel wash, leachate system and pumps.
  • Operates a variety of landfill equipment in support of landfill operations.
  • Operates scales and related computer programs; inspects incoming loads; collects fees from customers.
  • Uses, carries and answers their cell phone for business purposes as determined by the assigned job duties and the department head.
  • Must meet regular attendance requirements.
  • Must be able to maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, managers and citizens.
  • Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • This position is deemed essential during inclement weather situations, and must report to or remain at work, even when administrative closings are announced, as determined by the Department Head.
