About The Position

Under general supervision, performs daily work assignments for the Solid Waste-Landfill Division of the Utilities Department in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED;
Two (2) years of experience performing basic maintenance tasks and groundskeeping;
Valid New Mexico Driver's License with a driving record acceptable to the City of Alamogordo;
Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Landfill Operator Certification issued by the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) within eighteen (18) months.

Responsibilities

Collects loose papers and materials at landfill site;
Sprays water on roads and covered sites to aid in dust control;
Performs various types of physical labor activities including but not limited to shoveling, building roads and fences, sign maintenance, landscaping, tree planting, erosion control and vehicle maintenance;
Assists with servicing equipment and vehicles;
Assists in the screening of incoming waste for proper disposal;
Works closely with the Landfill Manager to complete a variety of tasks relating to the maintenance and purchasing necessary to keep the yard in good operating condition;
Performs basic welding and light fabrication tasks, as assigned;
Performs upkeep around scales, landfill grounds, and in administrative and shop areas to ensure a safe, clean, and organized facility;
Cleans and assists in the maintenance of the leachate control system;
Assists with construction activities including but not limited to methane gas piping system and leachate pipe system;
Cleans and maintains landfill equipment;
Responsible for landscaping, mowing, and grounds maintenance;
Performs general custodial duties for landfill facilities;
Paints or repaints equipment, buildings, and signs;
Maintains and repairs perimeter fencing;
Assists with landfill surveying work;
Assists scale house operations by weighing, measuring, recording, and directing loads;
May assist with solid waste collection and disposal activities outside assigned area as needed;
On a daily basis, responsible for cleaning up after oneself to ensure that the work area and shop are maintained in a safe, neat, clean, and orderly condition; participates in keeping the common areas clean and immediately reports any concerns about workplace cleanliness or items in any landfill facility that are damaged, broken, or missing to the manager;
With proper training and appropriate supervision, may be tasked to operate equipment, including but not limited to a compactor, scraper, dozer, loader and other machinery as needed;
Safely operates City vehicles and equipment;
Contributes to a high-quality work culture through participation in training and mentoring to develop skills, including safety-related training and skills;
Interacts professionally and provides excellent customer service to all levels of City staff and citizens to ensure high operational and service standards; and
Performs duties in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.
Must maintain required license(s);
Serves as back-up to the Landfill Attendant through the operation of the scale house to weigh trucks, collect fees, and issue receipts;
Occasional non-traditional work hours may be necessary during evenings, weekends and on holidays;
Maintains the confidentiality of information obtained during the performance of duties; and
Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
