As a Land Surveyor in the Design & Engineering Division, you will play a critical role in providing surveying expertise to support complex, large-scale projects at LLNL. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, ensuring precise land and construction surveying, accurate documentation, and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This position requires technical expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work autonomously. This position is in the Project Management Office (PMO). The Project Management Office (PMO) provides LLNL with engineering, design, estimating, construction, and project management services. PMO provides infrastructure services to enable cutting-edge research and development in the areas of defense technologies, global security, laser science, bioscience, and more. PMO offers cradle to grave infrastructure services to achieve reliable delivery of completed projects with priority on safety, collaboration, and a workforce working toward our shared vision. This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.

Requirements

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in surveying and mapping, civil engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and at least five years of surveying experience.
  • Registration as a Licensed Surveyor (LS) or Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) in the state of California or reciprocity from another state or ability to obtain a California license within 24 months.
  • Strong knowledge of California land surveying laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Proficient with modern survey technologies, including GPS, total stations, and surveying software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, etc.)
  • Technical, analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to organize and effectively coordinate multiple and frequently conflicting, concurrent tasks, with good follow-through.
  • Strong ability to interpret complex data and provide technical guidance to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Significant experience and advanced knowledge of the professional practice of surveying
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable state and national construction codes and standards.
  • Significant experience in design management, including project planning, scheduling, professional services estimates, and adherence to completion dates.

Nice To Haves

  • Dual licensure as both a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) and Professional Civil Engineer (PE).
  • Advanced knowledge of the professional practice of Civil Engineering
  • Membership in professional organizations such as California Land Surveyors Association (CLSA), American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM), or American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE).
  • Experience designing site grading, roads, pedestrian walkways, parking lots, retaining walls, erosion control measures, and/or soil stabilization.
  • Knowledge of applicable DOE Orders, Federal Standards and knowledge of safety protocols, environmental considerations, and regulatory compliance in the research and construction sectors.
  • Experience working on large-scale infrastructure projects, ideally in a government or research facility environment.
  • Experience in managing design teams or projects.
  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related mapping technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and oversee land surveys for various site development projects, including boundary, topographic, construction surveys, and programmatic equipment alignment.
  • Prepare and review survey plans, legal descriptions, reports, and other related documentation in compliance with California, county and LLNL regulations.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, architects, construction managers, construction contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure survey data meets project requirements and specifications.
  • Assist in the review and approval of survey-related designs and ensure integration with other engineering disciplines.
  • Utilize cutting-edge survey technology such as GPS, total stations, and laser scanners to collect accurate field data.
  • Provide technical expertise to resolve survey-related issues, offering solutions in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Maintain survey data archives and provide ongoing support for project lifecycle needs.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and quality standards in both field and office settings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Prepare procurement documents for the subcontracting of outside surveying services to supplement internal capability; manage the contracts, including preparing project scopes, technical criteria, level-of-effort estimates and schedules.
  • Independently serve as Land Surveyor and, if licensed, Civil Engineer for surveying and civil site development projects within PMO and other LLNL programs.
  • If licensed as a Professional Civil Engineer (PE): You may also contribute to civil site design, grading, and utility coordination, as well as provide engineering review for infrastructure development projects and mentor staff in both surveying and civil engineering integration.
