About The Position

The Lactation/Discharge/Educator Registered Nurse is a lactation-certified nurse who demonstrates clinical expertise, professional judgment, and knowledge of the breastfeeding dyad. This role is responsible for providing education and support to breastfeeding mothers and families, prenatally and postpartum, in both in-patient and outpatient settings. Key duties include conducting lactation assessments, creating lactation plans of care, and delivering designated education (discharge or childbirth). The position also involves assisting with staff education events and community outreach related to lactation, discharge, or childbirth education, including community-based childbirth preparation classes. Additionally, this nurse ensures appropriate, safe, and timely postpartum discharge, providing discharge education to all postpartum patients. The role functions independently in a non-administrative capacity, acting as an advocate for patients, families, and significant others, and serving as a resource for clinical staff.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one (1) year of related maternal infant nursing
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or a diploma program
  • For new hires after 2012, Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing (BSN) is required within specified timeframe as outlined in the New Hire BSN Agreement policy (126.045)
  • Graduation from an accredited lactation counselor or consultant program; must obtain within six (6) months of hire date
  • International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Certified Breastfeeding Counselor (CBC), Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC) certification, or similar
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification; must obtain within ninety (90) days of hire
  • BLS: Basic Life Support/CPR
  • FL RN: FL Registered Nurse License

Responsibilities

  • Provide education and support to breastfeeding mothers and families, prenatally and postpartum, in the in-patient and outpatient setting
