About The Position

The City of Harrisburg is accepting applications for a Laborer III in the Department of Public Works - Bureau of Neighborhood Services . This employee performs manual labor of more than ordinary difficulty which often involves the use of some skills acquired by experience or on-the-job instruction. Normally works under the supervision of the Director who issues orders at the Sanitation office in the Public Works Complex. Employee in this position may perform work independently or be part of a crew. Requirements

  • Some knowledge of a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and manual task.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual work requiring physical dexterity and walking/riding for an extended period under varying climatic conditions.
  • Ability to react quickly and appropriately to alarms and hazardous situations.
  • One year of prior experience with sanitation collection or in performing semi-skilled maintenance or construction tasks, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License, Class C.

Responsibilities

  • Works as member on Sanitation Collection Crew.
  • Operates vehicular equipment related to job assignment.
  • Collects and disposes of trash, refuse, rubbish and recyclables (weighing up to 80 lbs.) into sanitation trucks.
  • Pushes, pulls, connects and disconnects containers (dumpsters) ranging in size from one cubic yard to eight cubic yard capacities.
  • Operates handle in rear of truck to compact trash.
  • Maintains regular, punctual and predictable attendance.
  • Reports to work and remains at work in a productive condition which includes not being under the influence or impaired by the use of alcohol and/or drugs.
  • Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with supervisors, co-workers and the general public.
  • Completes all assignments in an efficient, consistent and timely manner.
  • Remains alert and reacts appropriately to the audio alarms of vehicular equipment.
  • Performs other related duties in equal or lower classifications as assigned by supervisory personnel.
  • Performs work as directed by supervisors in accordance with Article XXX, Job Classifications, Section 1 provision of the Basic Labor Agreement.
