What you will be doing JOB DESCRIPTION Implant Retrieval Lab Technician, Department of Biomechanics Job responsibilities: Assist with the operation of the implant retrieval lab, including but not limited to coordination with the Pathology Department for implant pickup visits and cleaning, cataloging, and appropriate storage of retrieved implants Participate in implant retrieval research projects under the supervision of a principal investigator or research engineer: sample selection, data collection and analysis, database management, and drafting of manuscript/conference abstracts Participate in weekly Biomechanics laboratory meetings and Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement grand rounds and other meetings and conferences when required Perform administrative tasks, including but not limited to ordering supplies, managing inventory of supplies, and interacting with vendors Maintain equipment and schedule routine and other required service as needed.

  • Ability to lift 20 to 30 pounds when handling bins of stored implants
  • Proficiency in MS Office software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams)
  • Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, bioengineering, mechanical engineering, or materials science
  • Demonstrated research experience through internships, laboratory stints, and completed research projects
  • Must be organized and able to work with minimal supervision, and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Knowledge of cleaning procedures and specifications of specified laboratory equipment and/or facilities.
  • General knowledge of specified laboratory solutions, materials and/or media.
  • Requires moderate physical work; including setting up rooms for conferences and meetings.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, Word.

Nice To Haves

  • Orthopaedics research, implants research and/or testing, and clinical experience are assets
  • Experience working in a lab environment a plus

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the operation of the implant retrieval lab, including but not limited to coordination with the Pathology Department for implant pickup visits and cleaning, cataloging, and appropriate storage of retrieved implants

  • Maintains Shared Laboratory Inventory Supplies. Tracks usage for more than 30 labs and maintains database of supplies.
  • Maintains Shared Laboratory Inventory Supplies. Orders supplies as needed in collaboration with Administrative Assistants.
  • Maintains Shared Laboratory Storage. Ensures organization of shared supply storage areas.
  • Maintains Research Equipment Inventory. Ensures all equipment tagged and updates database.
  • Maintains Research Equipment Inventory. Contacts service providers as needed to repair equipment.
  • Maintains Research Equipment Inventory. Maintains emergency contact information for freezers.
  • Assists with Lab Safety Training. Ensures all lab staff have been trained on correct use of lab equipment.
  • Assists with Lab Safety Training. Schedules safety training for new staff.
  • Ensures Lab Safety. Ensures autoclave in good working condition and sterilizes glassware and instruments.
  • Ensures Lab Safety. Washes laboratory glassware and instruments.
  • Ensures Lab Safety. Maintains lab water baths.
  • Ensures Lab Safety. Ensures organization of fume hoods.
  • Ensures Lab Safety. Arranges chemical waste collection for labs.
  • Completes Housekeeping Tasks. Ensures conference room setup properly for seminars and meetings.
  • Completes Housekeeping Tasks. Communicates with housekeeping to ensure conference room cleanliness between meetings.
  • Completes Housekeeping Tasks. Assists in arranging biohazardous waste and sharps collection as needed.
