About The Position

The Department of Pathology is seeking a Laboratory Technician IV to provide under general supervision, directs and performs complex technical and operational duties in support of laboratory services within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Coordinates daily workflow and allocation of resources to ensure efficient specimen collection, processing, and testing for neonatal patients. Performs advanced pre-analytical functions, moderate complexity testing (including blood gas analysis), and NICU phlebotomy. Serves as the primary technical resource for NICU laboratory operations and provides supervision and training to shift personnel. Ensures compliance with regulatory standards while supporting high-quality, timely patient care. This position is 100%25 time, Monday – Friday, 0400-1230, with rotating on-call. The Department of Pathology is part of UI Health Care, a comprehensive health sciences center that serves Iowa and the region, as well as patients referred from the United States and overseas. Requirements

  • Five years of laboratory experience including one year as Laboratory Technician III or equivalent level experience, or
  • Certification as a Certified Laboratory Assistant (CLA) and three years of Laboratory experience (one year at LTIII or equivalent), or
  • Any combination of related post high school education and experience which totals five years, or
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician and one year related laboratory experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Clinical Laboratory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with EPIC Beaker Laboratory Information System.
  • Experience working with Middleware and automation is highly desirable.
  • Experience providing functional supervision is desired.
  • High volume public contact/customer service experience.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates daily laboratory operations in the NICU.
  • Provides advanced technical expertise in NICU specimen collection and processing.
  • Oversees laboratory equipment, maintenance, and operational readiness.
  • Provides leadership, training, and supervision of personnel.
  • Manages inventory and supply distribution.
  • Performs bench duties and provides operational coverage as needed.
