About The Position

The Laboratory Supervisor provides day-to-day support for clinical laboratory operations under the direction of the Laboratory Manager. This position assists with coordinating staff scheduling, monitoring workflow, monitoring inventory, ensuring quality control procedures are followed, and supporting regulatory compliance. Performs testing procedures for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases; supervision and/or training of personnel; quality assurance and management; compliance with all regulatory agencies; and maintenance of policies and procedures. In addition, this position is responsible for managing all clinical laboratory charge capture to support the revenue cycle, ensuring accuracy of test orders, billing codes, and documentation to optimize reimbursement and prevent denials.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology.
American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or equivalent
Current Licensure in the State of Washington.
Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the clinical laboratory of an acute care hospital (in non-waived testing).
Minimum of one (1) year experience with Laboratory informatics
Minimum of one (1) year experience with Laboratory inventory management
Meets CLIA Classifications: Technical supervisor (high complexity testing) for all areas excluding immunohematology. General supervisor (high complexity testing) for immunohematology.

Responsibilities

Assists the Laboratory Manager with the day-to-day operation and coordination of Laboratory services following organizational goals and objectives.
Assists the Laboratory Manager with the development and maintenance of integrated laboratory testing and billing through the hospital's electronic medical record system in conjunction with Information Management Services and/or Informatics.
Assists the Laboratory Manager with coordinating the training of new laboratory employees.
Assists the Laboratory Manager in coordinating calibration and/or quality control for new reagent lot numbers and ensures that current reagent lots are used first.
Assists the Laboratory Manager with coordinating reagent and QC cross-over studies.
Assists the Laboratory Manager with the development and maintenance of departmental policy and procedure manuals to ensure efficient and professional department operation and guidance.
Assists in point-of-care training and testing for all hospital and/or clinic departments.
Maintains the Laboratory inventory system; oversees cost control measures in the utilization of department supplies, materials, and equipment.
Monitors expiration log.
Competent in all areas of the clinical laboratory.
Has a complete understanding of Clinical Laboratory policies and procedures.
Manages laboratory charge capture processes to ensure accurate and complete billing.
Collaborates with the billing department and revenue cycle team to resolve coding issues, review denials, and ensure accurate charge entry.
Audits test orders, requisitions, and registration workflows for documentation accuracy.
Provides education to staff on proper test ordering procedures, CPT coding, and documentation standards.
Participates in ongoing efforts to improve charge capture and reduce revenue leakage.
Monitors technologist bench work and provides supervision.
Organizes the analysis of proficiency samples; assists the Laboratory Manager with the submission of results for evaluation and grading, and investigates unacceptable or ungraded results.
Identifies opportunities to measure, evaluate, and increase quality, safety, effectiveness, and efficiency.
Maintains current knowledge of hospital policy, state requirements, and other accreditation and/or regulatory requirements.
Monitors preventative maintenance and quality control on all instrumentation and methods, including biannual calibration verification and/or Individualized Quality Control Plans.
Uses hospital-approved computer systems to perform routine and administrative functions through host systems and network programs.
Maintains reports and statistics for administrative, regulatory, and reporting purposes.
Stays abreast of new technology in supplies and equipment and evaluates for quality or cost improvements.
Consults with appropriate personnel when test findings are unusual and/or difficulties are encountered in testing.
Demonstrates the knowledge of proper identification and reporting of medical/health care errors. Protects the patient in the event of a medical or healthcare error and, as appropriate, assists in resolving such errors.
Notifies the patient care unit and/or physician of critical lab values.
Manages and operates laboratory equipment safely and correctly.
Follows Standard Precautions and infection control procedures at all times.
Performs quality control checks on equipment, performs calibrations, and troubleshoots out-of-range results.
Performs quality control tests on reagents and stains, and documents results.
Submits QC for peer review.
Performs proficiency testing as directed; samples will be tested in the same manner as patient samples (unless directions indicate otherwise) and not referred to reference laboratories.
Maintains accurate laboratory records on procedures performed for statistics and billing.
Prioritizes work to achieve maximum efficiency; can adjust schedule in view of STAT orders, admission blood work, etc.
Consults with other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
Consistently draws blood by venipuncture, finger stick, or heel stick competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.
Correctly collects legal specimens (urine, blood, DNA) and correctly routes chain-of-custody forms and other paperwork as directed.
Accessions patient tests into laboratory information system.
Prepare specimens and necessary paperwork for referral lab testing.
Knows the procedure to follow if a lab specimen is not labeled correctly or is contaminated.
Demonstrates competency in the knowledge of the delivery of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Understands how to handle cultural factors such as religion, food preferences, family/community relationships, healthcare attitudes/understanding, trust/privacy needs, socioeconomic environment
Checks and restocks supplies as needed. Issues and records inventory properly.
Reorders supplies on a routine basis; monitors backorders; monitors inventory for accuracy.
Documentation - Able to provide/demonstrate knowledge of: Laboratory logs, Quality control analysis and interpretation using acceptable ranges, Statistical data, Analyzer batches, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Microbiology and Hematology orders, Billing procedures, Writes legibly and accurately; completes documentation, Enters and retrieves lab results in the computer system, Time cards
Demonstrates proper use, calibration, and maintenance of: Laboratory testing analyzers, Centrifuges, Hemocytometers, Incubators, Microscopes, Various reagents/stains/media
Department Environment - Able to locate: Hospital telephone numbers/extensions, Eye wash station, Fire alarms, Fire extinguishers, Exit doors, Equipment temperature log, what is acceptable range, Personal protective equipment
Department Resources - Able to locate and demonstrate the use of: IT ticket system, Maintenance ticket system, Oracle Cerner help desk and ticket system, Clinical Laboratory Policy and Procedure Manuals, Hospital Policy and Procedure Manuals, Computer downtime procedures
Knows the procedure to follow if exposed to blood or body fluids
Actively participate in a continuing education program
Responds to changes in work schedule as necessary; performs well in emergency situations.
Demonstrates the ability to be flexible and organized under stressful situations.
Able to perform all duties in all areas of the Laboratory; covers for absentee staff as appropriate.
Performs other relevant duties as assigned.
