About The Position

This is for a full-time processing technician in the clinical laboratory. The hours may vary slightly due to staffing constraints and workload, but weekday hours are 3:30 pm to 12:00 am, with weekend and holiday rotation required. Weekend hours are 6:00 to 2:30 pm. SUMMARY Perform laboratory specimen processing consisting of receiving, sorting, assessing, and distributing specimens of blood, urine, stool and other biological fluids. Performs moderately complex lab testing as needed.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in laboratory science preferred.
  • High school diploma or the equivalent required.
  • Recent training and experience in laboratory technology strongly preferred.
  • Must be able to communicate and effectively exchange information with laboratory staff, nursing staff, physicians, physician office staff, patients, patient’s families, other customers, and guests.
  • Requires judgment including prioritizing tasks according to medical urgency, efficiency, and good guest relations skills.
  • Stroke education is required.
  • Refer to Administrative Policy A-148 for specific education requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory specimen processing consisting of receiving, sorting, assessing, and distributing specimens of blood, urine, stool and other biological fluids.
  • Performs moderately complex lab tests.
  • Operate laboratory equipment such as a centrifuge and fume hood.
  • Operate laboratory computer terminals to enter, edit, or retrieve lab data in the lab module.
  • Answer telephone calls concerning patient results and specimen requirements, solve problems, and help customers with their questions.
  • Register patient samples and enter physician orders in the computer system.
  • Retrieve patient samples from outpatient clinic and adjacent physician offices.
  • Prepare specimens for transport to reference lab.
  • Performs moderate complexity testing accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
