With team accountability at the forefront of your work ethnic and knowing the sacred trust placed upon us by those we are serving, the phlebotomist/processor is the laboratory’s front-line personnel when it comes to the collection of blood samples for laboratory testing. The phlebotomist/processor also performs clinical laboratory pre-analytical laboratory services. This includes knowledge and competency in the following operating systems: Test requests (i.e., requirements for filling out test request forms, authorization to accept verbal orders, etc.), Specimen collection, Specimen Transport, and Specimen Receipt/Processing. Performs ordering, distribution and stocking of laboratory supplies and provides communication link from hospital personnel and technologists, section supervisors, asst. laboratory director and laboratory director. Responsibilities

  • Collects and processes specimens in a manner that optimizes final test results.
  • Patient preparation

  • Understands guidelines for emergency testing: Priority for patient specimen handling
  • Knowledge of computer downtime procedures
  • Competent with specimen identification standards according to CLSI
  • Competent with protocol for minimization of large draw volumes
  • Has knowledge of the proper preservation, transport media, and the importance of prompt delivery of laboratory specimens
  • Has knowledge of storage requirements for specimen integrity
  • Knowledge of how to order and cancel patient orders
  • Provides communication link from the hospital personnel and technologists, section supervisors and/or laboratory director
  • Maintains certification and skills for direct patient care. This also includes annual CEUs, safety and laboratory competency requirements
  • Security access to LIS to complete required duties only
  • Orders, distributes, and stocks laboratory supplies
  • Make sure that scheduling needs are communicated to the section supervisor or laboratory director and work with other processors for coverage
  • Participate in laboratory meetings
  • Demonstrates teamwork by example in day-to-day coordination of duties with other staff, by accepting weekend and holiday work assignments as appropriate
  • Scheduling conflicts are virtually always resolved through cooperative discussions with fellow staff members
  • Successful performance will be monitored by specimens per year lost for testing due to unsatisfactory identification, improper collection, storage, or technique
  • All patients (in-house or out) and physicians and physician office personnel will be handled in a courteous, friendly, and professional manner. No more than two valid client complaints per calendar year
