About The Position

The Laboratory Operations Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the laboratory to ensure efficient workflow, regulatory compliance, and high-quality results. This role manages personnel, equipment, inventory, and safety practices while supporting continuous improvement and collaboration with scientific, clinical, or quality teams. The Laboratory Operations Supervisor must possess strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills, as well as experience with laboratory instruments, operations, and troubleshooting in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a biology science, a chemistry science or medical technology from a four-year college or university
  • Where the candidate possesses a science related Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific subdiscipline, they must demonstrate a minimum of 6 hours of biology credits, 6 hours of chemistry credits and 12 additional science credits per § 493.1489
  • Laboratory experience: Minimum of 4 years
  • Demonstrated experience with increasing responsibility
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory safety, quality systems, and regulatory standards
  • Ability to work with potentially infectious human blood and body fluids using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment
  • Ability to work with automated and manual platforms
  • Must possess skills required for aseptic techniques
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with PC based software programs
  • Demonstrates a high level of integrity and honesty in performing tests, documenting test results and maintaining patient, client, employee and laboratory business confidentiality
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills
  • Must possess analytical judgment, problem solving skills, accuracy and strong detail oriented

  • Ability to speak and hear well enough to communicate clearly and understandably with sufficient volume to ensure an accurate exchange of information in normal conversational distance, over the telephone, and in a group setting
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time as necessary in the laboratory (4 or more hours)
  • Ability to lift and move items weighing up to 20 pounds
  • Physical dexterity sufficient to move body frequently around laboratory equipment and instrumentation
  • Ability to continuously operate a personal computer for extended periods of time (4 or more hours)
  • Mental acuity sufficient to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions

Responsibilities

  • Supervise day-to-day laboratory activities to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant operations
  • Oversees, reviews, teaches, and performs analyses of patient specimens
  • Coordinate sample workflow, scheduling, and prioritization
  • Analyzes chromatographic and mass spectral data generated by our GC and LC labs
  • Ensure adherence to SOPs, quality standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Performs and records quality control to ensure accuracy of clinical data
  • Ensures preparation, availability, and proper handling of chemical reagents in accordance with SOPs and quality standards.
  • Monitor laboratory performance metrics and implement process improvements
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate laboratory technicians and support staff
  • Schedule staff shifts and manage workload distribution
  • Address performance issues and support professional development
  • Enforce laboratory safety policies and biosafety procedures
  • Maintain documentation for audits, inspections, and accreditation
  • Investigate deviations, nonconformances, and incidents; implement corrective actions
  • Support internal and external audits
  • Manage inventory of reagents, consumables, and supplies
  • Coordinate with vendors for service contracts and procurement
  • Communicate effectively with management, scientists, clinicians, and quality teams
  • Oversees sample workflow activities and ensures adherence to quality and turnaround time requirements. Able to clearly document in applicable logs and LIMS system for traceability daily
  • Follows Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures for all tasks
  • Follow all applicable regulatory requirements
  • Completes training of new staff members on lab protocols in accordance with all SOPs and training documentation
  • Ability to move between departments without issue
  • Maintains a positive attitude and works well within a team as well as independent
  • Participate in interviews and assist managers in hiring process
  • Ensure training is completed and all documentation is signed off
  • Actively participate in regulatory readiness program as well as any inspections
  • Complete delegated responsibilities from manager
  • Demonstrate outstanding competency within all trained areas of the Laboratory Technologist
  • Review test results for quality and acceptability prior to being reported to clients
  • Assist Manager to ensure that section procedure manuals are complete and current
  • Directs and oversees Quality Control activities within the section. Assist Manager in overseeing the maintenance and record keeping for all instrumentation within the section
  • Collaborate with Manager in troubleshooting assays
  • Serves as the primary supervisory resource for staff, providing guidance and operational direction within the section. Assist Manager by interacting with vendors and purchasing agents to ensure quality in supplies and reagents while meeting budgetary and service goals
  • Document and communicate performance of staff for input into the performance evaluation process
  • Monitor turn–around–time metrics and incorporate changes within section to improve workflows when appropriate
  • Identify ways to improve quality, efficiency and productivity through process improvements that employ Lean and Six Sigma efficiency and accuracy principles
  • Encourage cooperative staff performance and adherence to protocol and regulatory guidelines
  • Other duties as assigned
