About The Position

The Laboratory Operations Specialist is responsible for providing support for various functions throughout the laboratory. While maintaining job functions, the Laboratory Operations Specialist is to progress in their learning of industry regulations (CAP, CLIA). The position encompasses processing a multitude of tasks such as performing equipment maintenance checks, handling information from Customer Service and laboratory personnel, changing equipment solutions, block matching, ensuring the correct cases are sorted, performing various clerical functions and identifying/communicating any issues they identify to their lead/supervisor. Handles, prepares and loads stainers; conducts dehydrating and coverslips slides utilizing manual or automatic systems. Routinely checks and verifies that case slides match the correct block and are all labeled correctly. Responsible for filing, tracking, retrieval and accurate record keeping. Logs appropriate information into the pathology computer system. Verifies match of case numbers. Ensures internal documentation is scanned and current with respect to all send out materials. Ensures the accuracy of cases being assembled prior to being packaged and shipped out via courier. Prepares, documents and packages cases sent to external facilities. Reports all quality occurrences to respective lead/supervisor in compliance with departmental Quality Plan; assists in documentation of all quality occurrences. The Laboratory Operations Specialist is responsible for solving numerous problems that include but not limited to: Sample, system and process issues raised by staff, customers, or other individuals. Identifies errors that impede productivity and develops ways to solve them. Patient’s specimen and requisition are received in the lab, but no orders are in the lab LIS system. Patient specimen is received in the lab with no requisition and no orders in the LIS system. Dealing with doctors or nurses when problems arise. Responsible for appearance of the lab. Prepares, cleans, sterilizes, and maintains laboratory equipment and accessories as required. The Department is expected to appear tidy by the end of the day. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures and by using independent judgment and discretion. The Laboratory Technologist is expected to analyze any testing data obtained in the lab and ensure that the correct results are reported to the physician. They should be able to handle complaints and determine proper courses of action to take. Reviews all procedure manuals annually or when changes occur in a timely manner when assigned. Performs other tasks and duties as may be added from time to time (such as ordering supplies)

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Maintains an understanding of the latest techniques and guidelines in the lab
  • Must have a basic knowledge of the rules and regulations that the laboratory is governed under
  • Must have interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, co-workers, and others
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook and general working knowledge of the internet for business use
