About The Position

The Manager of Laboratories administers research laboratories within the Stony Brook University's R&D Park facilities. The successful incumbent will have excellent interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational skills, and exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving. Program Development and Oversight - In collaboration with the OR&I Facility Manager, and the Operations Team: Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive laboratory safety policies, procedures, and guidelines. Establish and maintain chemical hygiene, biosafety, radiation safety, and hazardous materials management programs. Conduct regular audits, inspections, and risk assessments of research laboratories and core facilities. Recommend corrective actions and ensure follow-up to mitigate risks. Report all building deficiencies and everyday issues to Facility Manager, Campus Operations and Maintenance, or the appropriate campus entity, for correction. Conducts assessments and makes recommendations on lab space utilization based on the OR&I mission and the productivity of faculty Prepares capital equipment lists and identifies opportunities for sharing resources and repurposing within the College. Stay current with emerging regulations, standards, and research practices affecting lab safety. Serves as the primary point of contact for campus "Emergency Management Plan"; serves as point person for laboratory and building-related emergencies both during and outside of normal working hours. Training & Education: Design and deliver in-person and online training on laboratory safety, chemical handling, biosafety, and emergency response. Create educational resources, manuals, and compliance toolkits for faculty, staff, students and incubator tenants Promote safety awareness through workshops, orientations, and ongoing engagement with the research community in R&D Park. Program Evaluation and Reporting: Develop and maintain laboratory safety performance metrics, and compliance reports for leadership. Monitor trends, identify areas for improvement, and recommend strategic initiatives. Liaison/coordinate with the following campus groups: Campus Operation and Maintenance (COM), Campus Planning Design and Construction (CPDC), Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), University Police (UPD), Information Technology (DoIT), Utilities Electrical Distribution and Maintenance (High Voltage) to notify faculty, staff and incubator tenants of issues or notices, and to forward maintenance issues as needed. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience in the administration of laboratory facilities.
  • Experience maintaining research and laboratory equipment.
  • Experience with Environmental Health & Safety inspections and/or maintenance.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Additional years of full-time experience in the administration of laboratory facilities.
  • Experience in the administration of laboratory facilities in an academic or research institution.
