About The Position

Working under the limited direction of the Director of Clinical Operations, the Laboratory Manager will support the clinical endeavors of University Health and Counseling Services and the Case Western Reserve University research community. This position will develop and manage the process flow of biological specimens, and the collection infrastructure (IRB protocols, participant communications, consent process) in support of the Case Western Reserve University community for diagnostics, screening, and research purposes. Requirements

  • Experience: 2 to 3 years of experience, preferably in the clinical area of a physician's office, health care facility and/or clinical laboratory setting.
  • Education/Licensing: High School education required. Associate's degree in medical laboratory services preferred. Certification by American Medical Technologists (AMT) or American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) preferred.
  • Possess clinical knowledge and skills in phlebotomy and obtaining and labeling clinical specimens such as blood, urine, oropharyngeal swabs.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements related to human subject research.
  • Ability in analyzing clinical specimens with appropriate analytes and commercial platforms that include but are not limited to commercially available and CLIA waived or certified PCR, and antigen processing platforms.
  • Possess clinical aptitude to identify abnormal or positive test results and communicate clearly with medical providers regarding abnormal or positive test results in a timely manner.

  • Regulatory compliance, including adherence to all Case Western Reserve University safety and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate certification and continuing education through American Medical Technologists (AMT) or American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) if applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain clinical specimens for diagnostic testing and/or research following OSHA/CLIA standards, including but not limited to blood and oropharyngeal swabs. Perform diagnostic laboratory tests including but not limited to chemistry, toxicology, hematology, and microbiology. Identify and communicate abnormal or positive clinical test results by alerting supervisory personnel and the ordering medical provider.
  • Support research activities which may include bioprocessing and analysis of samples according to HIPAA laws and IRB requirements. Tasks may include enrolling/consenting individuals, collecting and entering data, answering data queries, cleaning data. Other tasks include managing regulatory activities such as collecting research certifications, maintaining regulatory documents, and data management.
  • Supervise quality assurance activities related to specimen collection and result management, including regular reconciliation and log maintenance. Maintain quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced troubleshooting, calibrating equipment, and monitoring quality control measures and protocols. Arrange, coordinate, and assure accuracy of reports for delivery in electronic medical records.
  • Adhere to strict infection control policies including universal precautions and the use of personal protective equipment according to University Health Services, CDC, OSHA, and CLIA guidelines. Keep work surfaces clean and orderly. Contribute to a safe and secure work environment by following established standards and procedures, complying with legal regulations. Maintain confidentiality, HIPAA/FERPA, and other regulatory agencies by keeping laboratory results and information confidential. Adhere to professional standards, Case Western Reserve University policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local requirements. Maintain a safe work environment by complying with all CLIA and OSHA safety guidelines.
  • Manage laboratory supplies and inventory.
  • Participate in departmental committees and other university activities, as assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
