About The Position

Under the supervision of the Director of Laboratory Building Operations, the Laboratory Building Operations Coordinator will work with faculty and administrators in academic departments and Facilities staff to maintain functional and safe research and teaching laboratories. The Coordinator’s principal responsibilities will support teaching and research laboratories in the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Neuroscience & Behavior, and Physics & Astronomy. The Coordinator will: Manage the inventory and assist in the movement of common consumable materials for research and teaching laboratories in consultation with multiple departments, including but not limited to compressed gas cylinders and cryogenic materials Provide hazardous waste pick up services for laboratories to the hazardous waste room in the Science Center and maintain the hazardous waste room in compliance with College regulations and environmental health and safety guidance Administer preventative maintenance programs and schedule repair visits with vendors of scientific equipment on centralized contracts, including but not exclusive to water polishing units, glass washers, and autoclaves Provide training to laboratory users on scientific equipment on centralized contracts, including but not exclusive to glass washers and autoclaves Maintain and perform regular inspections of chemical spill kits, first-aid kits, and other health and safety equipment in coordination with Facilities and Columbia Environmental Health and Safety Manage a shared backup inventory of common lab consumables and the lab coat laundering program Coordinate the regular maintenance and calibration of standard laboratory measurement and magnification equipment, including but not limited to laboratory balances, automatic pipettes, and light microscopes Support laboratory emergency response under the guidance of Barnard Community Safety, Columbia Environmental Health and Safety, and other emergency response personnel Maintain intermittent hazard communications and signage to ensure that all posted information is current and compliant with regulatory requirements Perform chemical container barcoding services for any incoming and exiting containers to assist laboratories with chemical inventory management Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • B.A. or B.S. degree in a science or applied science field
  • Minimum of two years of research experience in an experimental laboratory, including as an undergraduate or graduate research assistant
  • Experience handling and identifying hazardous materials, including but not limited to compressed gases, cryogenic materials, corrosives, flammables, and biosafety level materials
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to support effective engagement with faculty, administrators, and facilities personnel
  • Strong attention to detail and organization
  • Commitment to responsiveness and follow-through
  • Ability to move and lift items of up to 35 lbs.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Office, Excel, Powerpoint); ability to learn additional software platforms as needed

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. degree in a science or applied science field
  • Experience as a full-time staff member in an experimental laboratory
