The Laboratory Assistant III is responsible for the collection of blood specimens, ensuring patient safety and consistency with age-specific considerations for all patients (neonates, infants, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics) as well as employees. This role involves performing venous, capillary, and infant heel sticks to maintain specimen integrity, following proper labeling protocols for specimen tubes/containers, and adhering to the order of draw/collection. The assistant also handles clerical functions, processing duties, specimen receipt, and distribution of laboratory specimens, along with training students and employees. They perform phlebotomist duties as assigned, must be knowledgeable of emergency procedures, and input and retrieve data from the laboratory/hospital computer system. The position may involve supervising or leading Lab Assistant I and II positions and performing CLIA waived laboratory tests. Additional responsibilities include prioritization, receipt, registration, and distribution of specimens, managing sendout/reference lab shipping, tracking, and billing, and assisting with processing anatomic pathology specimens, including preparation of microscopic tissue slides, staining, and specimen management.
