About The Position

Under the direction of the Manager, the lab assistant is responsible for support functions, preanalytical processing, scheduling and accessioning patient samples as well as postanalytical report scans and emails. Assisting with inventory control and order management, specimen storage and retrieval. Performs maintenance required by the laboratory under direction from the Medical Laboratory Scientists. Tissue Bank support required as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • One(1) Year as a Medical or Lab Assistant or demonstrated experience in laboratory
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service skills and exhibit a professional attitude.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement and project management.
  • Basic computer skills (e.g. email, Microsoft WORD and EXCEL)

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field preferred
  • 2-3 years as a Medical or Lab Assistant or demonstrated experience in laboratory preferred
  • Proficiency in HHC Computer systems i.e. EPIC, SunQuest, CoPath preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Delivery and receipt of specimens.
  • Provides client services/support to physicians and other healthcare staff; answers telephones; answers questions and addresses concerns from clients; is an informational resource for the Department; demonstrates excellent customer service skills in all interactions with clients and patients.
  • Verifies, clarifies and resolves unclear test orders, contacts appropriate provider.
  • Performs processing tasks including receiving specimens, confirms appropriate specimen ID, verifies specimen labeling, process aliquots and batch (track specimen list) for send out testing.
  • Checks specimen quality and quantity. Reject unacceptable specimens. Log for department.
  • Epics registration , including acquiring patient demographic and pre authorization documentation
  • Investigates unreceived and missing samples and records findings
  • Freezer maintenance, specimen archiving, inventory management and ordering
  • Participant in special projects/teams and performs other related duties as assigned within the scope of the position
