About The Position

Arnot Health is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Labor and Delivery Technician to join our Labor and Delivery team on a per diem basis. This flexible role offers the unique opportunity to be part of one of the most important and memorable moments in a patient's life-welcoming a new baby into the world. Under the direction of a registered nurse, the LPN plays a vital role in providing high-quality, patient-focused care during labor, delivery, and recovery. The Labor and Delivery (L&D) Technician provides technical and clinical support in the L & D area. In collaboration with the unit management team and staff nurses, implements specific procedural and technical tasks.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience required, with on-the-job training or a graduate of an accredited school of surgical technology. May also be a graduate of a Practical Nursing Program registered by the New York State Education Department or by the licensing authority of another state. Current NYS LPN licensure preferred.
  • Minimum one-year hospital experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire date.
  • Moderate physical effort required, to include lifting, reaching, stooping, and bending. Ability to read and write required. Direct patient care tasks required. Required to be on feet much of time.
  • Category I. Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains an orderly surgical field so supplies can be handed quickly and efficiently.
  • Prevents injury to the patient by removing heavy or sharp instruments from the operative site as soon as the surgeon has finished using them.
  • Prevents contamination of the surgical field by the strict practice of aseptic technique.
  • Prevents the possible contamination of team members by following Universal Precautions standards.
  • Is alert to any intraoperative dangers to the patient.
  • Takes part in sponge, needle, and instrument counts, per protocol. These items must be accounted for during the procedure. The technician takes part in counting the items before, during and after the surgery to ensure that they are not left in the wound.
  • Accepts and properly identifies any medications or solutions according to medication safety guidelines.
  • Properly identifies and preserves the specimens received during surgery.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by watching the progress of the surgery and knowing the various steps of the procedure. He/she passes instruments and other supplies in an acceptable manner.
  • Assists the surgeon in tissue retraction, suture cutting, fluid evacuation or sponging the wound.
  • Assembles all instruments and supplies and prepares them for decontamination and resterilization. Assists in the safe clean-up of the operating suite following Universal Precautions.
  • Assists in ordering and stocking supplies for the department.
  • Prepares instruments and supplies for sterilization. The technician takes part in cleaning instruments and supplies and in wrapping them properly for sterilization. He/she is knowledgeable about sterilization techniques and is responsible for maintenance of equipment.
  • Assists in the safe transportation of patients in and out if the department.
  • Assists in restocking the operating room suites by removing outdated items.
  • Assists in the preparation and selection of equipment for scheduled procedures.
  • Understands aseptic techniques.
  • Understands the different processes to render objects clean, disinfected, and/or sterilized.
  • Practices effective problem identification and resolution skills as a method of sound decision-making.
  • Sets priorities appropriately.
  • Uses effective working relationships with all health care team members.
  • Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient/significant others rights.
  • Performs calmly and efficiently in emergency situations following appropriate unit and Arnot Health protocols and procedures.
  • Attends continuing education programs designed to increase flexibility in job performance, communication, and knowledge of technical aspects of position.
  • Attends all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.
  • Provides age appropriate care to patients (Refer to age-specific competencies).
