LEVEL OF WORK: Entry SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Close from higher level laboratory or Medical personnel. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None. JOB DISTINCTIONS: Differs from Laboratory Technician 2 and Laboratory Technical Assistants by the preparation of laboratory specimens to be evaluated by higher level laboratory personnel. EXAMPLES OF WORK: EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED. Performs veni-puncture in keeping with standard protocol on patients to obtain blood for requested analysis. Interviews, screens, and performs sterile veni-puncture in keeping with standard protocol to obtain 500 ML whole blood for use in the blood bank. Prepares laboratory specimens such as blood, urine, stool, and sputum for diagnostic evaluation. Prepares feces and other materials for examination for the presence of ova and parasites. Prepares, embeds, cuts, stains, mounts, labels, and catalogues tissue sections. Prepares, stains cover slips, and catalogues cytology specimens. Prepares reagents, soils, and plant and animal tissues for analysis to identify pH, lime, organic matter, minor elements, soluble salts, etc. Operates pH meters, salt bridges, balances and colorimeters, calibrating as necessary. Performs microscopic examination, records, and reports test results.

Requirements

• Two years of general laboratory experience; OR Completion of an accredited clinical laboratory or medical laboratory technology program; OR An associate or bachelor's degree in medical technology, nursing, clinical laboratory science, or a biological, physical, or chemical science; OR Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician or Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
• Positions in Human Testing Laboratory environments must be licensed to practice as either a Laboratory Assistant or a Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Technician in the State of Louisiana as required by Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Personnel Law R.S. 37:1311-1329 and the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
