About The Position

Immediate opening for a Lab Specialist in Hammer Lab. Research will focus on the investigation of immunology and interactions between host and microbe in the gut, lung, and brain. The Lab Specialist will perform advanced laboratory techniques and procedures in a research laboratory, including developing new assays. Animal procedures include the management of mouse colonies, adoptive transfer of immune cells, and the use of microbes in animals for studies of pathogen defense, microbiome studies, and colorectal cancer. Independent judgment and assessment of research outcomes essential. Laboratory procedures include the extraction of immune cells from tissues, generating flow cytometry panels, cell sorting, RNA isolation, and reporting results and statistical comparisons. Additional duties include sharing in the general responsibilities related to the functioning of the lab, assistance with ordering, receipt and inspection of raw materials.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or other scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience)
  • Two years full-time laboratory experience
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required.
  • Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures as well as the ability to make statistical calculations, analyze results, prepare reports and perform specialized tests also required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and directs specialized and complex lab tests, experiments and animal procedures for studies.
  • Assists the Principal Investigator in the design, implementation and performance of new protocols and procedures as well as the modification of existing techniques.
  • Reviews scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information concerning experimental procedures.
  • Makes advanced statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing research results.
  • Operates complex and highly specialized laboratory equipment. Instructs others in their use.
  • Maintains a log of supplies used in procedures.
  • May supervise, train and review the work of laboratory personnel.
  • May prepare equipment and rooms for studies.
  • May assist with preparing budgets.
