The Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism and the University of Virginia’s (UVA) School of Medicine seeks applications for a Lab Technician to work with Silas Culver, MD. Dr. Culver’s laboratory investigates mechanisms of obesity-related kidney injury using mouse and cell models. This position is responsible for assisting in the development, design, and execution of basic science research projects in this area. This position will assist with molecular techniques such as PCR, RT-PCR, western blot, and ELISA as well as tissue preparations for electron microscopy, confocal microscopy and tissue staining. Work will involve the use of in vivo mouse models and in vitro cell culture models. In addition, the position will involve statistical analysis, graph production, poster creation, and assisting in research paper writing for grants and presentations. The successful candidate must possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and demonstrate the ability to articulate information to investigators and other research team members. The successful candidate will also be expected to: Perform similar duties to Lab and Research Aide, such as collecting specimens, setting up and performing experiments of a repetitive nature; and preparing culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions as instructed. At the direction of the Principal Investigator or senior staff, perform biological, hematological, chemical, or physical analysis. Participate in research or clinical work involving treatment operations and experiments with animals to include care and feeding, , and observation during post-operative or treatment periods. May perform some surgical procedures on small lab animals. Prepare support materials, compare and assist with analyses of data and write reports. Assist with literature reviews. Operate, adjust, and maintain specific scientific apparatuses and instruments. Order lab supplies and maintain inventory. Record accurate information and logs of experimental data. Keep informed of new lab techniques. Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects. May contact and coordinate schedules with study subjects, handle information intake, and record and track results. May provide logistical support to the study. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
