About The Position

The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester is seeking an individual to work independently under the supervision of the Senior Lab Engineer to provide direct support for lab intensive Optics courses, independently provide direct support to Optics research labs on technical and safety topics, assist Senior design groups working on Capstone projects and assist with demonstration equipment used in Optics outreach activities. Additionally, the individual will work independently under the supervision of the Director of the Hopkins Center to train Optics researchers on the use of specialized optical metrology equipment eg. interferometers and scanning interferometric microscopes, schedule use/availability of the Hopkins Center equipment and maintain relationships with metrology equipment vendors to maintain and update the specialized hardware and software in the Hopkins Center. This position requires one year of experience with specialized optical equipment such as interferometers, spectrometers, detectors, cameras, microscopes, telescopes and polarimeters. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Requirements

  • B.S. in a STEM related field and/or technical experience in industry is required.
  • 2 years of relevant experience required including 1 year of specialized experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Self-motivated problem solver with strong computer and technical skills
  • Candidate is expected to learn programming software.
  • Ability to work some weekday evenings during the academic year.

Responsibilities

  • Support Lab intensive Optics courses: Work with faculty to design and construct optical systems for lab activities. Design data collection and analysis methods. Operate and demonstrate the operation of optical systems to Graduate and Undergraduate students. Order consumable equipment and assist with new equipment purchases and upgrades
  • Support Departmental Research Laboratories Equipment moves and lab clean outs. Lab preparation for new faculty hires. Provide a point of contact for technical and safety assistance. Provide technical support for specialized research.
  • Assist Senior design groups to complete Capstone projects. Assist students to select and purchase appropriate equipment. Provide appropriate space for and assist with optical systems built for Capstone projects.
  • Assist with Optics outreach activities Assist Optics outreach groups to design and construct new demonstrations Assist with setting up tours, demonstrations and provide printed materials
  • Train researchers on the use of specialized Optical Metrology equipment in the Hopkins Center. Demonstrate and maintain a high level of competence in advanced metrology of Optics and Optical systems. Schedule the use and availability of the Hopkins Center metrology equipment. Cultivate relationships with Optical Metrology equipment vendors to maintain and upgrade Hopkins Center equipment as necessary and appropriate. Develop device applications to facilitate specialized measurements as needed for research and lab course work.
