About The Position

As the leader of the Information Display and Simulation group in the Vehicle Safety, Engineering, and Defense Research Lab, you will manage Human Machine Interaction (HMI) Research scientists in the Information Displays & Simulation group, overseeing the planning and execution of research in various areas within the HMI domain. Your immediate task will be to lead and manage innovation in several content domain areas: (1) human performance testing and modeling using immersive technologies, Driving Simulators, Virtual Reality (VR), and Augmented Reality (AR), (2) Design and evaluation of User Experience in autonomous vehicles and ADAS, (3) Measurement of Human Physiological Responses using both Subjective and Objective Methods focused on stress, cognitive load, trust and other critical factors. As the leader of the group, you will demonstrate your deep knowledge of Human Factors, Statistics, Cognitive Psychology, Biometrics, Simulation and Usability Testing/Engineering to design for quantifiably better human performance in GM’s future vehicles. You will publish your research findings in peer-reviewed conferences and journals to enhance the reputation of General Motors. You will also network effectively with universities, research institutes, startup companies, federal agencies, and other advanced technology laboratories to create a leverageable partnership network that can be used to leverage investments and augment the GM skills base.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship required to comply with federal government contract provision expressly restricting role to U.S. citizens.
  • Strong, charismatic, leader with excellent people skills.
  • PhD or multiple advanced degrees in Psychology, Engineering, or a Physical Science plus 7+ years relevant work experience.
  • Experience as technical leader & individual contributor
  • Research and development project planning/management/budget responsibility.
  • Sociability skills in collaborating with varying degree of customers, including executive management.
  • Resourcefulness for working with multiple deliverables spanning different technical areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to break through barriers to execute plans.
  • Multidisciplinary engineering skill set.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Work to define, participate and plan research programs and identify innovative approaches for Safety, Engineering, and Defense Research.
  • Assess corporate technology needs through active collaboration with R&D, Vehicle Engineering, Defense and Safety Teams.
  • Develop project portfolio that addresses GM needs while improving team efficiency in an ever-changing technology world.
  • Optimize internal and external capability to execute research programs including leveraged funding (e.g., GM R&D, university, government/federal, vendor, other external collaborations).
  • Participate and evaluate by writing timely and high-quality research reports, external publications, and records of invention to detail new insights and research results in your team’s area of research.
  • Develop a global network with key universities, government labs, and industrial labs to access the world’s best technology and applications.
  • Lead technical discussions and reviews as a scientific specialist in your field. And communicate results and progress across the organization.
  • Grow and diversify relationships, skills, and proficiency base.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of the state-of-the-art research in specialized areas for this position focused on biometrics and sensing as well as human factors research will be critical.
  • Consistently demonstrate critical thinking and strong collaboration with peers and across research programs.
  • Be a champion for safety in the workplace.
  • Develop team members’ individual and group capabilities to support GM technology needs.
  • Administer/execute allotted budget to efficiently achieve research program technical goals.

  • Effectively communicate technical challenges and results to R&D leadership and GM executives as needed, including internal and external reports and presentations.
  • Identify/maintain intellectual property via internal systems.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry and technical developments affecting areas of responsibility; provide insightful analysis of technology trends and identify proficiency and skill needs.
  • Develop corporate contacts and represent GM R&D effectively to the engineering community (defense, safety and engineering) to meet strategic objectives.
  • Motivation and focus on coupled with execution skills, ability to demonstrate value creation and results.
