Lonza's Integrated Biologics R&D Strategic Innovation Accelerator (SIA) team is seeking a Lab Automation Engineer to design, develop, and implement high-throughput (HTP) automated workflows to accelerate R&D innovation. This role will focus on developing HTP experiment workflows by integrating liquid handling robotics with cell culturing instruments to enhance bioprocessing R&D efficiency. This position offers strong growth potential, with opportunities to take on increasing responsibility for system design and strategic automation initiatives over time. This role is based in Bend, OR and is an onsite position. You will help accelerate R&D innovation by designing and implementing high-throughput automated workflows. This role requires creativity, agility, and a passion for learning—working with diverse scientific teams to develop custom automation solutions that drive innovation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in lab automation or bioprocessing.
  • Proficiency in Python, VBA, or structured text scripting.
  • Ability to prototype and iterate automation solutions quickly.
  • Experience integrating LIMS or cloud-based data systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and learning mindset.
  • Familiarity with liquid handling systems and workflow automation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with liquid handling systems (Hamilton, Tecan, Beckman, Opentrons, or similar) and workflow automation.
  • Experience with DeltaV DCS, process automation, or SCADA systems.
  • Familiarity with bioreactors, PAT tools, and real-time analytics.
  • Experience in working with automation powered by machine learning or workflows assisted by artificial intelligence.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based automation solutions and digital twins.

  • Design and implement high-throughput automated workflows for R&D projects.
  • Optimize plate-based cell culture and analytical assays.
  • Program liquid handling systems and robotic automation tools.
  • Integrate automated data acquisition and processing pipelines.
